Tbogg, you are correct, we do have a few black bears but almost all sightings are along the east and SE border of the state, (PA and WV). Couple years ago they did spot one as far west as the Dayton area but thats very rare.
No grizzlies. I live in Hudson between Akron and Cleveland and there was I black bear in the park land that butts up to my property. They had some pictures in the local paper. There have also been a few in the youngstown area.
Lol I like the comical approach, as far as the U.S. I am pretty sure the Grizzly are only in AK, Montana, maybe a few in CO, and maybe a few other Rocky Mt. States.
Drew the grizzly population in the lower 48 are limited to Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. Colorado F&G does not believe that there are Grizzlies in Colorado, but there have been in the past. There are some in Washington as well. I see them occasionally while I am fishing here in Idaho.
Here is an account of an Ohio "brown bear" sighting that supposedly happened. I wasn't there. I didn't see it. But the family and kids were all shook-up pretty bad.
We once knew of a family who acquired a large farm house and land in the Newton Falls, Ohio area. At the time, they had eight children ages ranging from 7 to 18.
One day, the kids were playing in the back yard when an extremely large, brown colored bear came into the field right behind the back yard. Thankfully, everyone managed to get inside the house without incident.
When the local police and the state wildlife authorities responded, the state wildlife officers supposedly stated that they were aware of the bear and had been monitoring it's movements, and confirmed that despite the bear's brown coloration, and estimated 700 lbs. weight, it most likely was a black bear. The new home owners (not animal experts) disagreed and insisted that this was a grizzly that they had seen, not a black bear. The wildlife officers supposedly further inquired into whether or not the homeowners owned firearms, and warned them that shooting, injuring or killing of bears in Ohio, for ANY reason, even in defense of one's self or family was illegal, as the bears are protected animals. The home owners insisted that they were liberal in their political view points and never considered owning firearms.
Again, this was the story that was related to me. I wasn't there. I didn't see it. Take it as it's worth. Just thought I'd pass it along.
Has anyone heard about that story of the cougar that was confirmed by dna to have migrated 1,800 miles from the Black Hills of SD to CT? Just sayin'.... My story above was probably a black bear, but a 700 pound one!!! I wouldn't want to cross paths with it no matter which species it was. Just sayin'
