Tailgate up, I want to show a little respect to the animal I just killed.

I've never really thought much about it, but up is how I usually do it. If I have to go out into a field to load it I definitely put it up, I don't want to have to load it twice.

Down, and it's not a matter of respect, it's the law in Wisconsin, the head must be visible while in transport until it is registered.

Yup! I agree with Golfing Sportsman. Here in WI you have to show the deer. Also, I always thought it was a good thing to display your trophy, no matter the size, buck or doe.

Sometimes we have so many that we have to keep the tailgate down, but most of the time we ride on the tailgate, so it's open anyway.

Tailgate up or covered with a tarp. Respect for the animal and for other people. Keep the dirt and road grime off of it. If it is worth showing then it can be taken to a buck pole where others that appreciate it are congregated.

I have the tail gate up. Not just for respect of the animal, but hunters already get frouned apon for just doing what we love. Where I'm from most of the people are hunters or don't mind it but sometimes I come through one of the bigger towns around us where theres a good chance someone wont like it. Don't want to give them anymore reasons to not like hunting.

I just gotta post this and all you old timers will remember probably seeing something of the same. Back when I was a kid there weren't many deer, and if a guy got a big buck, he didn't put it into the trunk of his car or the back of his pickup, he strapped it across the top of his hot car hood and paraded it around town drinking beer and blowin' his horn! Good lord how redneck that seems today. It was pretty bad back then but the deer were so few most people were surprised just to see one.

Tailgate up, not because I'm worried about Antis where I live people are as much or more a redneck than I am. When I had a Jeep though I'd tie them to the spare or window mounts on the hood. Not that I'm showing them off but that's the only place to put them on a Jeep. Jim's comment reminded me of that and made me grin.

I close the tailgate because I pull a gooseneck horse trailor. Usually the buck is quartered anyway. I see guys driving around with their tailgates down I suppose to show off their kills. One day I noticed what appeared to be a couple decent bull elk in a pickup bed. As I approached closer imagine my surprise when I realized that they were gigantic mule deers.

Tongue in cheek, I thought it depended on how big or small the trophy. Actually, I feel showing off the animal a little embarrassing, and don't like to offend sensitive people. Never realized there might be regulations involved. I've only hunted out West were we usually need to get the animal quartered quickly, to cool the meat and to transport it easily.

Depends on the area of the Country I guess. Around here if it is a nice buck or bull it is customary to do a few victory laps through town proudly displaying your success. Last fall it took me a couple hours to make it through town visiting and showing off my Mule Deer Buck. This is one of the reasons I live where I live. I don't think this shows disrespect to the animal, quite the opposite.

I had only 3 miles to get home and I thought if I crawl I'd be OK. I ended up loading that deer into the truck twice. That was the first andlast time I did that.

That was down an old back road where nobody saw. It is good to keep it a little more concealed so people who don't like hunting already don't like it even less.
