There's a storm warning out for waterfowl, and it comes in the form of a Black Cloud. This devastating new steel ammo from Federal mixes innovative and lethal FliteStopper™ steel pellets with standard steel pellets in the range- extending FliteControl® wad for superior downrange patterning and hitting power. Unlike standard round steel pellets, FliteStopper pellets have a sharp cut-on-contact surface that produces bird-slaying wound channels unlike anything you've seen before. The FliteControl wad is configured 180° compared to standard wads so the cup flares at the rear instead of the front. This causes pellets to remain more tightly patterned longer as they leave the barrel, adding 10-15 yards of effective range compared to conventional steel loads and increasing pellet energy downrange. This deadly combination of superior patterning, increased Knockdown Power™ and longer range means there can only be one forecast when Black Cloud™ FS Steel shows up in the blind – expect it to rain ducks and geese. The new 3" #3 offering is a special edition endorsed by Phil Robertson – The Duck Commander.

Winchester Xpert steel is very good, we tried black cloud and Winchester was just as good if not better, in the field as far as clean kills. But it was not a very good test because it has so many factors. At Dick's it goes on sale for $25 for 100 3" shells. the 3" velocity is 1550fps fast for steel. And I have a Stoeger and it loves to eat these shells.
Why do you feel the need for 3.5 inch shells? The 3.5 inch loads have thier place buy for 98% of you waterfowling efforts you don't need them. I shoot 3 inch Kent Faststeel for ducks. For decoy and beaver pond wood ducks #4 are more than enough for any duck or goose that happens to drop in. If I'm after geese I shoot the Blackcloud #2 loads.
3" shells are fine. I have a 3 1/2", and I love it, but I've found for waterfowl that the 3" is just as good, maybe even better when all things are considered. The best in anything is Hevi-Shot. It's also expensive, but it is the best. Way better than steel. It's even better than lead.
Hevi-Shot No. 4s for ducks, No. 2s or Bs for geese. I've killed geese with Hevi-Shot No. 6s before, but I would not recommend that unless they are within 30 yards.
I usually carry #2 Winchester Xpert steel and kill both ducks and geese. If it is a blue bird day and nothing is coming into the decoys BB is handy for the geese. Personally I have found no need for 3 1/2" shells. When I started all I used were 2 3/4"". CHEERS
i would go with federal black cloud or remington hypersonic steel
