Negative. A friend of mine has seen some, though. It would be a very interesting experience trying to explain it to some of the good 'ol boys around here!
G.O.B. - "You done gone and shot a hen, boy?"
You - "It was a bearded hen! Perfectly legal."
G.O.B. - "It's gobbler season, son! Ain't had a hen season in these parts for years!"
You - "Sir, just look at my license! It says "Bearded Only"...
G.O.B. - "Listen up, youngster, don't try to tell me what is and what ain't a gobbler! You done shot a hen, boy, and now you're a-trying to tell me that it's a gobbler just because it's got a few puny little hairs?"
You - "No, I'm not saying that it's a gobbler! It's a bearded hen that I shot during the bearded-only season!"
G.O.B. - "There ain't no such thing as a bearded hen, and there ain't no such thing as a bearded season! You can only shoot gobblers in turkey season, boy, everyone round here knows that! And don't you interrupt me or try to tell me different neither..."
I live in the South. What can I say? =D
I shot one several years ago in the spring season. It was cold and rainy, I was getting sick, and I had just the one day to hunt. The bearded hen was the first legal turkey I saw. She had a very thin 8-inch beard. The hen was delicious roasted whole, and I made a call from the bones of one wing. For some reason, hen wings are supposed to make the best wingbone calls.
A few years ago I shot one here in KS. The bird spooked and ran from a brush pile, I saw beard and fired a snap shot that rolled her. Since then we average seeing 2 or 3 a year but although they are legal we let them walk. phil is correct about the wingbones. They do make the best calls.
My hunting buddy shot one.
I've seen several, but have managed to identify them in time to avoid shooting them.
i shot one my sister shot one and my dad shot a white bearded hen!
