All the serious duck hunters seem to have black labs. They are the most balls out hardcore swamp maniacs you can come across. Strong, fast, fearless, and completely aloof to even the coldest wettest conditions.
I have one of each, the last of a short line of Golden Retrievers. Good house dog, crappy retriever. Go with the Lab. Ditto on stinky coats. My Lab goes circles around any golden.
Go with the lab. They make perfect house pets, and when you put these dogs in a blind they know it is time for business, and they hunt aggressively, confidently, and gracefully.
I have a lab and my buddy has a golden, my lab will swim in any temp water all day. When my buddy's golden goes in ice water a few times he starts to shiver. I don't think that his coat repels the water and cold like my lab.
i've had/got both. go with a Lab. Goldens make wonderful pets but unless you can find some special bloodlines, they just barely average for hunting. as for coats, Goldens shed like hell, year round.
I'd go with a lab, if your going for ducks from what I studied up on when i got mine they are real good swimmers. And matouse3 has a good point. Lot harder to keep golden clean.
I agree with WA Mtnhunter, the only time I've seen a golden bigger tham my old lab was those barrel shape goldens. Just the coat is enough for me to stay away from a golden. Black labs are more common but I don't think you will have problems with a chocolate or yellow.
I've HAD BOTH AND I COULDNT ASK FOR ANY BETTER OF COMPANION AFIELD.BUT WHERE I HUNT THAT GOLDENS COAT HELD HIM BACK.I WANT TO HUNT NOT BECOME A HAIR DRESSER BETWEEN FLIGHTS!MATOUSE3 IS RIGHT AGIN.
I can answer this. I read in a training manual that the best Field Trial dogs make the best hunters. Go to a field trial and pick out the best dawg. Talk to club members and judges and find out who the best dawgz are. Get one of their pups.
If you want a golden, make sure it comes from hunting stock as hunting has been bread out of most goldens. I had the pleasure of hunting over one golden who was a great hunting dog, but it was the only hunting golden I have ever seen, whereas I have known of many great hunting labs. For pure duck/goose hunting, consider a chesapeake.

Go with a lab... dry quicker, smell better, and swim faster as far as hunting goes.

Choose the lab. The lab is more tuned for hunting.
Lab. Unless you like combing long hair full of burrs?

Both are great dogs, but the lab is a "lower maintenance" dog.
goldens are better because they are biger
I'm a "LAB" man myself.
Sheeeeit, what Golden is 97 lbs of muscle without being fat?
I would go with the lab, we used to have one and it was a great dog. I plan on getting another one soon.
I say a lab. My neighbors have 2 and they both have great instincts!

I got to go with a lab seeing as that's the kind of dog sitting next to me right now chewing on her bone.

There really is no comparison. A lab is the best dog all around you can get.
Get a lab and you will have no regrets
