Well I've never heard of anyone setting out to hunt possums. I would find a coonhunter and have them help you find a dog that will run possum and coon. Check out www.huntsmart.com and get a good light and a .22 lr will work.

Bomber it wouldn't be considered a good coon dog, I've coon hunted a long time and if a dog runs anything that isn't a coon its considered trash and no one really wants a dog that runs trash.

Out a live trap in your back yard baited with peanut butter.

from Del in KS wrote 3 years 1 day ago

Peanut butter won't draw a skunk (like sardines) but coons and possums love the stuff.

Well....basically...a gun. If you want it to be easier just set out something in a trap or bait them.

get with a coon hunter, get a light and a 22. basically when you get in with the coon crowd they will show you how to do anything you need to know and they are all the time buying and trading dogs. like another poster said coon hounds that tree or run anything but coons are going to go cheap. after you get a dog you will need all the dog equipment, kennel dog box for your truck, leashes, collars, and probably a pair of hip waders depending on where you hunt. GOOD LUCK!

What KIND of gun would you use? An OLD one, you don't even need to load it, just beat them in the head with it.
I knew this one would get out of hand.

A .17 HMR works very good for possum. A good old .22 would work also.

summit29,
I can tell you from experience you can't beat a opossum in the head and kill it without breaking your stock and gettin worn out. Use a .22.
But, this post confuses me too. I thought eating opossum went out with the Hoover administration.

You might buy a better gun then Jim, or try a 2x4.

As we head further down the possum hole:
Thanks for the advice Jim, and I do hope it was an old rifle you used.
Herbie, what legnth of 2x4 do you recommend?

Hey check this out. I used to put out a trash bag with lots of smelly garbage in it. then I would sit on my porch at night with my .22 and wait till the possums come out. I got one on my wall right next to my computer, no lie.

Ya keep in mind them sons a guns can be hard to kill. I've taken some that withstood 3 hollow-point .22's through the vitals before I knocked 'em down. Then they hiss and crap and stink so skin em quick.

i am from ohio and i sometimes go out just for possums. just get on your 4 wheeler and drive to the center of the edge of a woods and stay about 50 yards out in the field wait a few seconds and spotlight the edges only about 5 feet up ( looking for their green eyes), they wont climb to high. they like to go to the tips of logs that fall against fences. take a coon squall along so ur legal. get on them quick cause they dart down the log and into the woods if they know u see em'

Trapping would probably work better than hunting them. Just set up a trap and bait it, put in a popular possum habitat, and wait overnight.

.22 LR should do the job if you can make the good shots. For longer ranges I'd try .223 to ensure a quick kill. A possum can't be too dead.

ok well im from nz and here we do go out specifically hunting possums coz we hav to otherwise they kill all the native birds and bush and we do that on a quad bike with spotlight and any rifle, usually .22 and 12 gauge tho. u cn also hook them out of low trees and club them aswell, or trap them but its too much effort putting a line out unless ur commercial.
