for my stand i bought a camo skirt which allows me to read a good book. what I like about this is that reading allows me to keep my movements at a minimum and my head pointed downward which allows me my ears to do the work, and the skirt hides the book. I also do this in my blind as well...
this past season i faced the same problem but i found it works best just to think about the lay of the land where the deer or what ever animal you are hunting will most likly come from and how your shot will be. i have also brought a book out there but if you are going to do that make sure you listen very carefully because they can sneak up on you.
This where real patients comes in, LOL! This is the place is where the least expected thing will happen. Relax and watch the squirrels chase each other; I call them the clowns of the forest. I like to spot whatever comes in advance able to react before it’s in range. Don’t be distracted and remain still and alert and you may just see that monster buck especially a bear slip in. But when it happens and it will at the time least expected, it will be the biggest adrenalin rush you will probably ever experience, better known as buck fever!
I've never been able to do anything except hunt. I hear of guys playing hand held games and reading books but I just stare into the woods. Maybe there's something wrong with me.
I listen to my I-pod with 1 ear bud so I can hear the woods with the other ear. Sometimes use a radio instead and listen to Rush or Sean Hannity. Do this only in the middle of the day or when you feel the chance of seeing game is low.
I watch the woods and critters, squirrels, chipmunks, birds and insects. I look at the fall leaves and enjoy the smells of the forest. I also do some of my best thinking and enjoy some of my best naps!
I just watch every thing around me and enjoy the sounds of the woods and relax do some thinking its a realy good time to clear my head so just being ther passes the time way to quickly for me
I enjoy just watching the scenery, and listening to the sounds of the forest. I have been known to nap at times. When I'm bowhunting I carry a couple judos to let fly at those pesky squirrels now and then.
I dont have to pass the time when im on stand. being in the woods during deer season on of my favorite things in this life. It usually goes by pretty fast for me. Watching the wildlife and just being there is thrill for me. Seeing deer an added bonus. I do carry my phone and text the wife and hunting partner if needed. Spent a lot of whole days on stand this year with alot of great memories

I usually listen to my zune using one earbud, on very very low volume. Then most of the time, I just watch the critters in the woods, and their comedic content, and imagine shooting them, but then keep a careful eye out for the large bodied brown movement in the distance.
Any hand held game works well, i played yatzee last season, but i recomend bringing two or three, that way you wont get board playing just the one. And I wouldnt recomend yatzee, it's really hard and you never get a Yatzee.
The most time I ever spent in a tree stand was during my first bear hunt, we were seeing bear all day; spending 12 hrs. a day in the stand. When I'm in the open like that I try to minimize as much movement as possible, so an ipod works well.
On the other hand, I use to guide for antelope and we would sit in huts on water holes for 15 hrs a day. That's a long day in anybody's book. In that situation you bring all the reading material you can get your hands on, plenty of games, ipod, whatever it takes to pass the time. Crosswords or word searches can work too.
I listen to my ipod or text friends, when i'm with a couple of other people hunting the same property, we text so we can share info about deer moving towards the other person(a heads up is always helpful!)make sure that keep a eye on the woods!!!
One time I was watching a bottleneck and accidently dozed for a moment. Woke just in time to see a monster buck enter the woods after walking right by my stand. No chance for a shot.
Sometimes I'll throw some bird food in front of my blind and watch the birds. If it's real slow I have a hand held poker game I turn the sound off and just check the area every few mins.
Oh now your asking for the trade secrets!!! :) I read a book, I text, if I'm on the ground I take a nap, I fantasize about shooting all the noisy squirrels and wonder why I can't ever see them during squirrel season,I take my camera and shoot all the does and young bucks to show later.
I am a youth hunter and i prefer to read paper backs. They fit in a pocket in your vest and gaurentee a quick way to pass time. I have also found that taking 10 or 15 minute naps(if your not extremely serious and are hunting open ground) gaurentees that you will be sitting still. Don't snore!
I recently took up all day vigils, but so far I have just passed the time by enjoying nature and all that God has provided us with. I love being able to escape and just sit outside waiting for that big buck to pass by.
One of the reasons I like hunting is, I can get back to nature ( the way god intended it ). No distractions. Just me, nature, my gun, and the deer. Although this will be my third season, I still haven't seen a deer while hunting, but I'm looking forward to sitting in my blind doing nothing. Ahhhhh nooothiiiinnng. I'm actualy going nuts waiting to do nothing.
The first thing that I do is I make sure that all of my stuff is organized I f I hadn't heard anything for 30. minutes then I lokk at a squirrel or a tweety bird for entertainment.
I sleep or I tune into other people's radio's and listen to what they are saying. I heard just yesterday a guy said that a buck was so close that he could have gone rambo on it a cut it's neck.

I was playing a hand-held video game once, and a deer just sauntered by me. I looked up to see it ambling behind a tree.

A paperback book thats a "good" read so you don't get bored, but not "great" so you forget why you're out there in the first place!
I don't recommend sleeping, that leads to missing possible shot opportunities
I watch the other animals that are around me. Sometimes they can teach you things about the game that you are hunting.
LOOKING FOR DEER.
I either watch the animals of the woods or I just sit there and relax and even take a nap sometimes.
I usually end up sleeping.
