Q:
Let's bring up the broadhead debate again. A couple hours ago my friend Dan arrowed a mature doe. His arrow tipped with a Rage 2 blade broadhead sliced through the ribcage from an upward angle (he was in a treestand 20 ft up) and exited though the left front shoulder muscle. It was a pass through. You can click my name and see the photo of the exit wound which is 3 inches across. She barely made 40 yds and piled up. Didn't have to follow the copious blood trail, she fell in sight. My point is not all broadheads are alike regardless of whether its mechanical or fixed blade. The Rage flies very well and really is like running them through with a broadsword. That makes 7 arrows shot and 6 dead deer collected since making the switch to Rage for Dan and yours truly. I tell you guys if you aren't shooting Rage you should be. You can click my name and look loweer right on my profile page for a pic of the 3 inch wide exit wound.

i believe if you make a good shot with any kind of broadhead the deer will die...so i'll stick to my muzzys for now since i have found they are very tough

I'm with tony167n...good shot placement is the key to killing deer regardless of the broadhead. Also, the rage broadheads are not legal for deer in all states. They are considered illegal to use on deer in NY because they remain in a "barbed" position.

I have heard lots of praise and rave reviews of the expensive Rage broadheads. You might say "they're all the rage". I tried a pack of the (expensive) 3 blade type, and am sticking what has worked well for me the past couple seasons. The picture Del posts shows impressive performance. A wound channel like that can actually turn a marginal shot into a kill, but i'll stick with my Nitrons or Muzzys, both of which have worked well and are reasonably priced.

I'm a Thunderhead guy. I've shot everything from turkey, bear, elk with them and love them but a few years ago I started testing different heads.

I will say Rage is the best mechanical if you shoot mechanicals.

This year I'm shooting G5's. So far they the results are not good. Concerning the small game heads I have broken two small game heads in only 3 shots. I hit a squirrel in the head and it split the head in 1/2. I struck a small tree branch the size of my thumb with another and it broke the head clean off. I'm shooting a 60lb stick bow. I hate to think what would happen if I shot them with my compound. I'm going back to Judo points.

The G5 Montec CS (carbon steel)so far are less than desireable. After just two days of hunting in the rain I discovered $80 worth of broadheads rusted in my quiver. I didn't spend $40 for 3 heads so I would have to take care of them. They do fly good, at least out of my stick bow.

I shoot Thunderheads , I've heard you say that you shot a nice buck with Rage but it didn't go thrue the shoulder bone . If you where using a fixed broadhead you might have that deer . I'm not going to use any mechanicals.

No I don't know anyone from Rage and get no money either. It's just that it is a very good product. Two of those deer were gutshot and the big buck was a marginal hit yet none went more than 60 yads. If it saves you one lost deer its worth it if you ask me.

The most recent F&S has a good article on mechanical heads. From our very own Kirk Deeter from FlyTalk no less.

Del,

That is one heck of a hole there.

That is a good point Del. I do not not use them because of price, just because i have tried many different types of broadheads and settled on the ones that work best for me. Unfortunately i have misplaced a pack of them, and they were sold out last week on my attempt to replace them. The gut-shot deer only went 60 yds? That is good. In my limited experience with that, they lay down fairly quickly if you don't push them. With that 3" wound channel, i can see why they didn't get back up.

I've been in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp for a while. But I've got a friend that swears by the Rage 2-blade and I've seen some of the wounds they cause. My hesitation with mechanicals has been the chance of a malfunction--opening in flight or not at all, but I've heard that malfunctions are rare. I'm pretty close to giving in and giving them a try. Maybe next year--it's already game time this year & I'm not one to change horses in midstream.

Yeah, the old fixed muzzys and thunderheads do the trick. But if technology finds a way to make my bow kill faster/more efficient...I'm all in. The proof is out there. Better penetration, wider wounds, and that pic basically says it all!!! I've been shooting mechanicals since I started bow hunting. I have never had a deer go farther than 50 yards. I bought the rage hoping they only go 30!

HOLY CRAP ! !
What a hole ! O.K. I'll get some for next year, but I've still got some Muzzys to shoot up and they have'nt failed me yet.
I wanted to get some Rage this year but you know what happened, so I had to pass on any "extra" expences this year.

I've never had broadheads as accurate as the Rage. They require no tunign and fly like field points! plug, if they leave a hole that big, what's not to like?
