Discussion Topic: On Obama And Gun Control
By Dave Hurteau
From Politics Daily:
This should be a time of great hope for supporters of stricter gun control laws. They've got a new president on their side, a Congress dominated by Democrats, even a terrible string of shootings this spring that should lend urgency to their cause.
Instead they're facing discouraging signals from the White House, falling support for tighter regulation, spikes in gun sales and a resurgent National Rifle Association. Just the prospect of new federal limits on guns has sent enthusiasts rushing to buy guns and join the NRA.
Are you encouraged that gun-control does not seem to be at the top of President Obama’s to-do list—at least so far? That more democrats seem reluctant to fight hard for gun control? Or do you feel it’s unwise to let down your guard?

You always have to keep an eye on DC. There's too many special interest ideology and economic groups trying to enforce their personal eutopia on the rest of us. Fortunately, a little sunshine goes a long way, and craziness can be stopped as soon as it starts.
For example, the Blair Holt etc Act (H.R.45) still only has one sponser (Bobby Rush) and has been referred to two committees that, in their hurry to jump on the radical bandwagon, have not even opened the folder containing the bill to read it. In short, it's going nowhere.
Interestingly, H.R. 17 has the same status, but has 15 cosponsors.
while all this is good news i wonder that maybe the issue is just out of vogue for the time being. like fashions come and go from time to time and maybe it's been beat up a little bit for the hollywood liberals and they have moved on for the time being (no doubt they'll be back) and with no noise from the ultra liberal mouthpieces no one else is worked up into a foamy lather so it takes a back burner. i don't think we are going to make it 4 years without the other shoe dropping so to speak.
Thing is DC itself hasn't touched any of the "social issues" at all. No politician wants to be viewed as working for anything other than economic recovery right now. If this recession ends and prosperity returns during Obama's term as president he will more than likely get around to gun control of some form or another using his "common sense" of course.
I am sorry I made a mistake in that previous post. Under the Obama plan no one is to be prosperous. If your prosperity gets out of hand you must give to people who work less and are less driven than you so they to can have the feeling of success too.
I think many Democrat members of Congress recall the Republican resurgence following the Clinton inauguration and AWB. Their number one agenda is to be re-elected! Goes for GOP, too.
What was I just reading? Prosperity and Obama in the same sentence?
It is encouraging, but just because he makes speechs where he puts focus on something else doesn't mean that gun control is not a big priority.
Nate
Gun control HAS been floated by the obummer administration, but the "political indicators", read polls, say that it is a losing issue right now. Rising gun and ammunition sales, ammo and component shortages, soaring membership in the NRA and state rifle associations, almost double increases in FBI background checks for firearms purchase and a surge in applications for concealed carry permits all indicate that this is an issue that the demoncrats do not need to burden themselves with while trying to socialize the economy of the United States of America.
This is encouraging for the short term, but may be misleading. San Fran Nan and her troubles with the CIA have temporarily dominated the news cycles, but remember that only a few days ago Hitlery and obummer, along with all their sycophants in the media were trumpeting the line that "90% of the illegal arms in Mexico come from the United States."
Another factor is the several states that have debated, considered or adopted 10th Amendment resolutions into their state constitutions. This has got to be sending a strong signal to Washington, D.C. as to the mood of the electorate, not only on gun control, but on several other issues as well.
The demoncrats are nothing if not savvy politicians, and a savvy politician knows that timing is everything. The time for gun control legislation is not right now, but it will become right with the right incident, or
will be set up by circumstances. Do not be lulled into complacency by lack of overt activity. Consider the duck, ninety percent of the activity is beneath the surface!
I think there are bigger fish to fry right now for Obama and his pals.
But....before it's all said and done, I look for a new ammo tax, a new awb, and a law stating that ALL private gun sales/inheritances have to use a 4473. Throw in a lead ban for good measure and welcome to 21st century gun control.
I can see the slogan now....
We don't want all you guns, we just want to make owning/shooting them a royal pain in the rectum.
Jim
BTW, for all the ammo hoarders out there, the lead ban will be made retroactive and all the ammo you are sitting on will either have to be used by a certain date or turned in to be destroyed.
And don't forget the serial numbers on ammo scheme and that it will be illegal to reload too...
Doesn't it sound like fun?
Jim
Humm... Lets think about this from the presidents view.
1.) Obama is from the mid-west where firearm ownership and shooting sports are a large part of our culture.
2.) Any attempt to restrict the firearms industry would further weaken the already unstable economy.
3.) One of the few area's that is steady and growing in these economic times are firearms/ammunition sales, why stop that.
4.) Gun control is the democrat's equivalent to the republican abortion issue, if they do anything about gun control they won't have a hot topic to use when they need to divert attention away from what is going on in Washington DC or around the globe. If the democrats really wanted to outlaw semi-automatic firearms, they would have made the Brady bill permanent when Clinton signed it! If the republican politicians wanted to outlaw abortion, why didn't they do it when Bush jr. had a republican house and senate, cause they wouldn't have a cloak to use to disguise things going on in Washington.
5.) This isn't really an important issue, with all that is happening both domestically and around the globe. The president has much larger problems to deal with than worry about tit for tat arguments about domestic gun control that hasn't kept firearms out of the hands of criminals yet!
For all those who think it is dooms day for gun owners look at what has been happening, gun control laws are becoming more and more lax. For example in MI we no longer have to take a newly purchased handgun in for registration (Safety Inspection) and to the best of my knowledge those records are no longer being kept. Bills are going in front of congress to allow CC in national parks.
I hope this response helps ease your concerns about Obama's intentions.
The 2010 elections are the most critical elections ever to face this Nation. I see this pseudoprogun movement is nothing more than a smoke screen to clear the way for a totally democratic controlled government to do whatever President Obama and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to push their agenda.
Throughout history, there are those foreseen what’s to come and the warning is loud and clear!
“Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.”
-Patrick Henry, from “Against the Federal Constitution”, 1788-Jun-5
“Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.” -Daniel Webster
“Experience teaches us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the government's purposes are beneficent.” -Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis, in a 1928 decision
“Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of the citizens to keep and bear arms. [...] The right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, one more safeguard against the tyranny which... historically has proven to be always possible.” -United States Senator Hubert Humphrey, 1960
“It goes against our nature to believe the worst, to assume we are being deceived, or to be always on guard against such deception. And every power seeker from Sun Tsu to Gorbachev knows this implicitly.” -from “The Greening” (1990) by Larry Abraham, co-author of None Dare Call it Conspiracy
Once again the term “Judas goat” comes to mind,
a goat used to lead sheep to slaughter!
So my question to you, are you a goat!
I feel a bait and switch coming on!
Once again the term “Judas goat” comes to mind,
a goat used to lead sheep to slaughter!
So my question to you, are you a “Judas goat”leading the way, sheep just following along, or do you see what’s coming!
Jim
How are they going to enforce the ammo ban?!
Clay,
They can't, but that never stopped 'em from passing stupid laws before.
Jim
All this talk of gun control by politicians show how much they really care about their country. They would rather their citizens be unarmed and unable to protect themselves than fending off intruders. Plus, the gun industry is one of the few right now not having any problems selling its products. Passing gun bans would worsen the economy put thousands of more Americans out of jobs. Last time I checked, the government worked for us.
I remain skeptical of Washington DC's attitude toward the Second Amendment and gun owners. I wouldn't trust them about this issue even if they were to start handing out firearms instead of tax refunds to private citizens...
Really, the only entity that can truly preserve the liberty of the people is a watchful and jealous people who also have the means to defend it. So, I try to be watchful, and I certainly guard my liberty with zeal, and I am never going to give up my means to defend it, even when the Federal Marshal comes to my door.
My only words to him/them will be:
"Are you sure you wanna ride this train?"
"Are you a family man?" and,
"What kind of flowers should I order for your widow?"
It's simply a poor tactic for oh-bummer to go after gun owners now. His polls tell him that waiting is the way to proceed. If anyone out there believes that this man is not a gun grabber you haven't been paying attention. I'm fully aware that this administration is convinced that only through massive government support can any of us survive, they want to control every facet of our lives. Don't let down you guard with this loser or our liberty's granted by the constitution will be lost forever.
I think increased membership in the NRA and increased ammo/gun sales are great for us. It sends the message that gun control is a formidable task to take on. Politicians aren't going to propose something if the public that keeps them in their job isn't behind it. If I were to "pick" a time to really get worried about it, it would be in Obama's second term, if he has one. I think Dem's (except Hillary) realize this is a losing battle. What hurts us so much is the constant headlines of kids shooting kids, or nut jobs going on shooting sprees. The anti's lick their chops every time this is reported. If we could get "senseless" gun violence out of the headlines so much, I think our 2nd Amendment rights would be much safer.
Although I think we should all keep out guard up, I do not think that gun control is on the top of the presidents' to do list. I think the first thing that is on that list is to fix our economy. He is doing a good job at taking away all our ammo though...
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759
I fear that under the looming expanse of governmental controll over all things American the result will end in the worst fears of all- a nation that is no longer free, or safe. Every bank, corporation, health care provider, or you-name-it that the government takes controll over is one more chip off of our free nation. Who knows where it could end up! I wonder if history will someday relate the following- "Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Barack Hussein Obama?
We shouldn't let down our guard, but maybe, just maybe people might be gaining some sense when it comes to guns and laws regarding them.
If you are not in the NRA you should either join or upgrade your membership. Already done that? Then pay for a kid to join.
The gun control groups have not gone away. They have proved in the past to be good at exploiting news and public sentiment, just a matter of time until the power sways back away from the gun rights camp to the anti-gunners, it always does. We just have to try and gain as much ground as we can when we can, and try and keep them on the defense so they are fighting over ground they are loosing, instead of fighting us over ground we are giving up......
I think this liberal congress and administration would try and pass some bill and insert some type of gun regulation(s) or bans that wouldn't be brought to light untill after the fact. Heck, they passed a more than one trillion dollar spending bill without anything being written or looked at before voting it in. There seems to be more opposition now on gun control so I see this government try and slip something in under the table.
This bunch in DC are like game you spot, never take your eye off the target.About the time we think maybe something good is gonna happen to the hunting world, some Idot drops a BOMB. No doubt there are more serious problems in ot country now,gun ownership, ammoand huntes are not included. Why don;t the powers to be worry abot our economy and forget guns. My dealer says he can;t get enough handguns since Jan.20th That should tell us something that the JOHN Q PUBLIC feels or knows. A house cleaning is in ordrr in DC. If you plan to by a firearm, ammo, best you hurry as the regs gonna get toughter. Shoot-um-straight and often.
I thought that Carter was supposed to take away our guns, then it was Clinton and then Clinton again. Now it is Obama that is plotting to take our guns. Get over it. No one is coming for our guns and they never will. I have grown up with my grandfather talking about this topic and it is just laughable. Keep up the hysteria though, I am sure the NRA and gun manufactures love all the fear purchases and new members.
Maybe people should pay more attention to other issues, such as the rape of our national forests under the Bush administration. What about how he emasculated the EPA? These are lasting and hopefully reversible impacts from the last administration that are actually felt by sportsmen and not just hyped up rhetoric.
Feel free to start the mindless Democratic bashing. It is that sort of thinking that made many people ask for a second helping of Bush's anti environment and yes, anti outdoors men policies.
The two best things in DC are gridlock or "out of session".
There will never be a time when "we" (shooters, hunters, protector's of our family's) will ever be able to "let our guard down" as far as the Second Amendment is concerned.
We should all be concerned with the myths that are used to push the anti-gun movement. We should be ready to discuss why we own / carry a gun, without raising your voice.
We need to make sure that our elected officials understand our views and that our VOTES will reflect our views.
We need to educated children on gun safety ever chance we get.
You must be willing to fight for your rights, or you must be willing to give them up.
Join the NRA or Gun Owners of American, membership numbers ARE important!
I think the single most important thing that we all can do is just be engaged with the daily happenings of our Government. Don't walk around as "sheeple". Be aware at home, in your neighborhood and when you are out and about.

This administration, much like all others before it, is pushing their agenda rather than fixing obvious, real problems that exist in our country. "Never let a good crisis go to waste." Examples are numerous, but the glaring example is Americas drug problem (a real problem) is being used as justification to further gun control (an agenda issue). Another example, the US and world economy is in turmoil, and the only action so far seems to be that the Govt. has nationalized much of the financial system, but has not yet passed one piece of legislation to address how things got that way in the first place. The list goes on.
Well I hate to say this but 30-30 cartridges at just under a dollar apiece if you can find them,22 cartridges just under $5.00 a box, if you can find them, and guns selling at triple their normal price.Seems like they have a pretty good start at gun control. They have at least stopped me from shooting for a while.
I'm still paying about $15/box for .22LR. Prices will go down on the other rounds when more production comes on line.
Should clarify that to $15 per box of 500 or 550 for golden bullet packs.
We the People is all that anyone out there must remember and in God we Trust one Nation usnder God. I am not preaching just stating Facts. We shipped a bunch of politicians and King's men back to England once and it can be done again. It will will take a vote to change the 2nd Ammendment and all the Politicians will not vote for it or we the People will vote them out and as a United State Marine Corps Veteran I will say I would be the first Country Boy to Declare my rights to run for office. There are too many people in this country with common sense to let them get away with this bull. We will have to endure and adapt and overcome the taxes and BS that they will throw at us for a little longer just hang in there Semer Fi. jalex94@hotmail.com PAPA58 Iam not afraid to let people know what I think and who I am and how I feel about the crap that is going on in our Country we need the Senate and Congress to tell everyone we have enough Laws and Regulations to last for the next 50 centries instead of making new ones lets start deletaing the stupid ones and not make anymore. WE Have Enough the Criminals have more rights than the working man and they don't care about the Veterans.
we cant let ur gurd down.the only reason obama didnt throw every gun in america into the ocean is because many people are showing him ther love of guns and hate of gun regulations as soon as people stop doin this he will feel comfortable about not gettin people mad and will put tons of unjust regulatiions up
we should never let our guard down . to often as outdoors men and woman , we quiet down when things are calm on gun control or hunting issues. only to let our voices be heard when some politician or special interest group starts starts poking us with a stick over them . its time to for all of us to take and lesson from the antis book, and never quiet down and never relax on the things we hold so dearly to our harts. the politicians of this country should never be able forget us or ever stop hearing our voice in their ears . the antis will never stop pushing against us , so we should all ways be louder and more vocal than them . the squeaky wheel gets the oil.
I just have a few things to say about this whole gun control issue.
1. Who the hell is going to go around collecting all of the guns and ammunition if they are banned.
2. The majority of the people that cause problems with guns get them illegally anyway so what is the big deal.
3. Look at all of the countries that have bans on owning a weapon. Their major crime rates went through the roof after outlawing privately owned weapons.
With that being said, I know quite a few people that were born with a gun in their hands and if somebody comes knocking on their door asking for them to turn in their weapons and ammunition, they are going to have one hell of a fight.

The two best things in DC are gridlock or "out of session".
