Tip of the Day: Stay Safe on the Ice

By Jerome B. Robinson

For safety, every ice fisherman should keep a life preserver, a length of rope, and a pair of screwdrivers within reach. Aside from the obvious safety factor, the life preserver provides a comfortable cushion for kneeling. The rope gives rescuers a means of pulling you out from a safe distance, should you fall through. You can use the screwdrivers as ice-grippers to help pull yourself out.

Excellent tips. I would also add a short plank for bridgingce that gets thin at the edge of a lake.
We get thin ice around here because the reservoirs continue filling through the winter, and the sun warms the soil on the bank, thinning the ice.
Two feet off the bank the ice is thick again.

Excellent info, taking the time to pack a little extra gear could save your life.

I am supposed to go ice fishing next season with my college buddies, I will make sure I pack what is needed.

Great information! I just read a post on another hunting forum where an individual was "duck hunting in a canoe."
He tried to break some ice that was in his path, when the canoe tipped over. He couldn't climb back onto the ice, (No Screwdrivers)and had to swim to shore.
Thanks again!

All good suggestions. Here are a couple more. Never ice fish alone. When the ice starts to get rotten towards spring ice fishing is over for that year.

these are great tools to have with you but in the winter sports issue of cabelas they have an arm band that has suction cups on it that will grip the ice if you fall through. So in addition you can hold onto the ice with your arms and pull your self up and out with a screwdriver

Really good advice, I suggest a wet/dry suit to keep your quick loss of body heat if you fall in.
