Man Spears Bear, Pays $1,000 In Fines

By Dave Hurteau

From the Detroit Free Press;

He may have gotten away with it in 10,000 B.C. with a mammoth, but a Chesterfield Township man was fined $1,000 in Ontario for killing a black bear with a spear.

Sault Ste. Marie district conservation officer inspecting the vehicle of Paul Hinderliter, 44, with the Canada Border Services Agency found a spearhead with blood on it in August, according to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources office.

Hinderliter admitted he killed a black bear . . . .

Unless the terms of killing the bear had to do with survival or self-protection, I deffinantly find it appropriate that he should have killed the bear more ethically. I mean yeh, it is a little crazy for him to spear a bear, but that is how people get hurt. Why would someone want to get that close to a bear anyways?

If he had a bear license, I'm OK with it. Spearing game isn't my cup o coffee but I won't criticise someone else's choice of take.

Balls or stupidity, I don't know. Something tells me if this hadn't gone the way it did, we would be reading about this guy in this years "Darwin Awards" and we'd all be talking about what a dumba$$ he is.

What a Testosterone ladden Dude!
Must have been a descendent of, killed a bar on this tree, Daniel Boone!
A mans, man, indeed.

Loving to deer hunt,I always said, "if deer season had a legal spear season, I would go huntin' with a spear!"
"Legal" being the operative word here.

Just how close do you think this guy had to get to the bear to get the job done: spear length?
What if he had to track it, did he have a back-up spear?
Do they make spears that have metal incorporated into the shaft?

Bob81, I would have to say both,"balls and stupidity,"in the absence of anxiety, guilt or condemnation.

A person hunting with spears would likely carry a couple of lighter ones with an atl-atl, and a heavy, lanceolate one like a boar spear for the finish or in case of a charge. Probably if you hunted bears without a gun or good bow, you'd want to be dressed rather Medievally for the occasion.

If this was in season, he shouldn't have been fined. I don't know when the bear season is up there. Apparently not August?

The village used to celebrate events such as this, and the hunter would have his story told. But alas this is the 21st century, and laws are laws. Still that would be a heck of a hunt, and an adrenalin rush.

It actually is legal in Alabama to hunt deer with a spear. The season coincides with bow season Below is the law as outlined at www.outdooralabama.com under 2008-09 season and dates.

DEER and FERAL SWINE may be taken by hand thrown spear during the open Bow and Arrow season on these species. The hand thrown spear shall have a sharpened blade a minimum of two inches in width. The spear shall only be hand thrown.

I dont personally know anyone who does this but I thought everyone would find it interesting.

Not sure if I was a cop if I would confront a dude that went cave man on a bear and won.

Canadian laws. But what is he doing carrying a bloody spear across the US/American border a year after he killed the bear? Must have figured he was going hunting again.

Why do people do stupid stuff? Is it really that difficult to follow laws? It is stuff like this that gives hunters a bad name/reputation.

As a Sault Ste Marie resident I am glad to see my hometown mentioned here at F&S.com... And as a hunter in Ontario I can say that there are rifle, blackpowder and archery seasons for blackbear. Spears however, are reserved for fish, and then only certain species, certain times of year and in certain areas... I must say that it seems to me that killing a bear with a spear involves less brass gonads and more stupidity IMHO. It also seems rather less humane to me... to the bear, or the person who finds what left of a hunter who misses his mark with a spear!

i'm thinking this dude was either crazy, has huge cojones, or killed something else and lied about it. either way, may just be best to let him be.

Probably figured taking a spear across the Canadian border was less hassle than a firearm.

as long as it was bear season and he had a license, i dont have a problem with it, this guy had a PAIR on him to spear a bear.

an interesting note-

New York state law actually allows spear hunting ...for frogs... and prohibits it for any other species.

The rational thinker in me would say that this is because most hand-thrown spears wouldn't have the energy to penetrate far enough to humanely kill big game.

The pessimist in me suspects the bow manufacturing companies might have made some strategic "generous campaign contributions."
