Virginia Gubernatorial Candidates Support Sunday Hunting
By Dave Hurteau
With a few caveats.
From The Roanoke Times:
Democrat Creigh Deeds, who in most polls is trailing Republican Bob McDonnell in the race for governor, made a pitch for hunters and other sportsmen Thursday by saying he would support a local option to lift a ban on Sunday hunting.
In response, McDonnell said he would also lift the ban, but only on private land. . . .
Deeds . . . stopped short of expressing support for a statewide removal of the ban. . . . “I've got three daughters that I love to death that live on horseback. The only day of the week they can ride during hunting season . . . is on Sundays, so my wife would skin me alive if I signed a bill that didn't have a local option."
Let’s hope Deed’s wife doesn’t not decide the issue for everybody else.

No hunting on Sunday!! Never heard of such a thing. One more big reason to keep church and state separated.
Being that I live in VA, this is great news to hear, but all these two canidates are trying to do is get votes since they know sportsmen and sportswomen can help a canidate win.
Just like obama a week ago talking about how he supports hunting. Its all a bunch of talk.
It will be interesting to see what happens when either of these guys are actually elected. I am sure they will forget about the sportsmen and women who help elected them.
But sunday hunting is long overdue.
No Sunday hunting sounds like a good reason not to move to Virginia.
I hunt in VA, my family owns property there. I don't see what's wrong with no Sunday hunting. It gives us a day where we don't have to hear the constant roar of shooting all around.
I know I'm gonna get voted down for this comment but I stand by it. I don't see how there is a problem with a ban on hunting on Sundays. If anyone cares to explain it, please do so.
To bluecollarkid, you must not work Monday through Friday. I do. Without Sunday, I could only hunt one day a week.
And, most of the places I hunt are well over 100 miles from my house. Without Sunday, I'd have to drive all that way to only hunt Saturday.
And, I'm closer to God in the woods than I would be in any church.
Seadog got it right. I work five days each week. Luckily, I've been able to get put on Sundays pretty frequently, but it can be a major drain on the working sportsman's time afield. If everyone needs a day to rest, make it a weekday, when most of us are at work anyway.
I'm from VA. I'd like to see Sunday Hunting. I work 5-6 days a week and I'd like to have an extra day when I'm off to Hunt.
I think they should restrict it to Archery only though I own both a bow and a gun.
I think they should Restricy it to a 1/2 day
I also think it should be up to the LANDOWNER whether or not he/she will allow hunting on that day.
I'm glad these guys are listening to Residents.
If they did this and implemented the restrictions I mentioned it would accomodate noise, traffic, safety and landowner concerns.
It would give an extra day to help farmers with crop damage problems.
I could see shotgun hunting for small game and Turkey with shotgun as well. Once again at discretion of land owner
I agree they're in it for themselves. You should hear the bickering and adds it's just as bad the presidential elections
dont matter to me either way i live in VA and i hunt after school durring the week and all day saturday. sunday would give me one more day to fill the freezer but after churh of course
Maybe this will help to explain my position. I do work M-F (usually), so I understand the idea if one is only hunting weekends. However, when I go hunting, I usually take some vacation time (4-5 days out of 14 days allowed) and hunt over a long weekend (my hunting grounds are more than 100 miles from me too). The Sunday break - while taking time away from being out in the field - gives me an excuse to get things done around deer camp like cutting firewood, repair the outhouse, shore up the fire pit, etc.
So I can understand the objections to not allowing hunting on Sundays but I don't see it as a dire circumstance that *needs* a resolution. That's just how I see it - not that I have anything against those that would like to see Sunday hunting allowed.
