Plastic may last forever and be cheap to produce, but like so many things found in the modern world, it is weal and you can't depend on it. I get very tired of supposed "wilderness grade equipment" with plastic buckles, or other essential components that the plastic breaks , abrades or otherwise self destructs. No plastic buckles on my gear! My whistle is plastic but I would not trust or purchase a plastic treestep.
I like the steel ones that crank into the tree with big wood screws.

This is only for the steps manufactured in Dec 08. They're been making these for years.

And if you don't like plastic then beware of composite boats and rafts and bicycles and cars, and be sure not to fly on any modern jets - you might be surprised at the amount and use of composites. Metal can fail, too. That said, I prefer metal but tolerate some plastic.
