My Biggest Fish Ever: The Swamp Donkey

By Tim Romano

Or swamp beast, or marsh monster, or whatever...  This thing was huge! I could have ridden it away from the boat. Baring one tarpon (which doesn't really count) this was the biggest fish I have ever landed. With a lot of help from Will Benson of worldangling.com fame we subdued this 51 pound black drum on a ten weight and one of Will's magic flies. I couldn't believe it...

Not that I'm one to chase big fish on a regular basis, but I'm curious what was your biggest fish ever, and what were the circumstances?

You just edged me out. Mine was a bright 50 pound King Salmon taken on the Kenai river in Alaska. Fighting it was the most thrilling 30 minutes of my life and while this all happened some 15 years ago I can still recall the details of that day with astonishing clarity. It was the perfect end to a day that ranks right behind my marriage and the birth of my children.

Congrats on the saddle worthy beast. What a hog!

My best fish was a 94 lb Alaskan Halibut. The best fight was a 10 lb Florida largemouth on a Zebco 202 with 10 lb line back in 1964 when I was 14.

62 pound tarpon on an accidental hookup using an 8 wt fishing for bonefish. That wasn't a battle, it was a war.

almost the same as that fish fish you got there about a 55 pound black drum most in probably the same area as you caught that one

A 20in 5lb rainbow they stocked in my creek. It was one of 2 they put in there, and the other one is either still in there or someone got him this fall. But I kept the black wooly bugger I caught him on, that he wrecked.

Early one spring 4 years ago I caught an almost 9 pound largemouth, I don't catfish much or travel to fish much, so it may not get much better than that for me. The beginning of one of the best months of my life, the end of the month found me with my first turkey. I think that's the ideal "blast and cast" spring gobblers and fat sow bass.

55lb Flathead off of a trot line. Yeah, it may not be the same as fighting one with a rod and reel but let me tell you.....that fish was pissed off and didnt like the idea of getting in the boat. Best rod and reel fish was a 6lb large mouth bass I caught when I was 7. Not a very impressive fish now....but it felt like I had caught a whale at the time.

I landed a halibut in Alaska that was over 200 pounds on a empty jug of anti-freeze with the fishing line wraped around it. We hadn't taken our rods out and made due with what we had. Obviously we didn't plan on fishing much this outing!

Deeter, isn't the record like 90 something... and the fly record is like 62 or something like that, you even had an article in the mag stating the records...

On a fly, buddy? Are you putting words in my mouth? Goodness knows I need all the help I can get... but that's a toad, by any measure for black drum, and carp also, for that matter. Timmy caught a hefty blackie, by any measure.

Cool fish. Mine was a 10' Thresher Shark on a guided trip. Just like pulling a VW Bug from the marianas Trench until it got up near the boat, then all heck broke loose, that tail started flailing until the deck hand threw a gaff through it. Best shark trip I ever took.

Wooo Timmy. Nice drum and well deserved given the conditions early in the week. My largest fish on fly is #150 tarpon, but the marsh has not given up a catch like this one on my rod! Great trip and sorry I wasn't there to witness this bearded beast.

Awesome fish! Don't mean to rain on anybodys parade but it looks like a red drum, not a black drum.

Oh trust me... he'd have called red drum if that were it... he was hoping, praying red drum after the bite... this was the consolation prize... not bad, mind you, but those boys in the Bayou count 'dem reds on a sacred scale... if that had been a 50-some pound red... trust me, the whole fly world would have heard about that.

Deeter, someone wrote an article a year or so ago for carp. So if I am wrong, I don't have a clue then.

Always cool to see the different species being landed on the fly. My biggest fish was a small 90lb striped marlin. It was landed with a 10 weight Rod and a 20lb leader, no bite tippet while we were chasing Dorado. Other than that it was a big 45 lb Bull Dorado on the same rig.
