Determined Angler Breaks Utah Black Crappie Record
By Dave Hurteau
From an AP story on OregonLive.com:
Jim Maack of Comstock, Wis., and some friends were fishing in the Escalante Arm last week when they found a school of large crappie hiding by a sunken tamarisk grove. . . .
[A] quick Internet search revealed one of the fish [they caught] would top the existing state record if a certified scale could be found.
Maack drove 70 miles to Bullfrog Marina before finding a bass tournament with a certified scale. The fish weighed 3 pounds, 5 ounces . . . .

Wow a 3 lb. crappie Crazy.
What a fish - it sounds like he deserved the catch as well. That would be a great time on a little ultralight spinning setup...
We catch Whites/Blacks up to 3.5 every year, The state records are 4lb/9oz(Black),4lb./7oz(White) here in Ark. we use ultra-light rigs and they are a BLAST to catch.
To much rain this year to do much fishing this year for them though.
Nice fish though.
I never caught a crappie over 2.5 lbs. Our state record in Missouri is 5 lbs. even. 70 miles is a long way. Most grocery stores or butcher shops have a certified agricultural scale they could have weighed it on.
hwo that is a huge crappie.
bowman77,
I live in St. Charles and I doubted your comment of a 5lb crappie being Mo record but your dang near accurate enough since it's 4lb 8oz. from a farm pond in '67. That guy must have been hand feeding it. Here's a link.

Not only is the fish amazing but the distance he drove to find a scale is amazing too. 70 miles sounds like someone really wanted that record.
I'm with Jim, and being a fellow Missourian, I am proud that the record crappie was caught in my home state. However, I don't believe that private or farm ponds should count towards a record. I could have had a crappie in a large aquarium for the past few years, and then just let it go in my pond, then using the same bait i had been feeding it all of this time, caught it and got my name in the record books--kind of makes you think doesn't it??
bowman, snowninja, where you guys at?
OK... let's get a few things straight. It wasn't 70 miles, it was only 32 ( by bass boat ) I was the one with Jim, and had my computer with internet service. I knew the Utah state record was just under 3 lbs. After making a few calls to varify this could be a record, I encouraged Jim to get it weighted. How ofen do you catch a state record? It couldn't have happened to a nicer person. Also, it wasn't hiding by tamarsk grove, he caught it over there by those rocks, next to shore...
MS white crappie record 5lbs 3oz. Thats a huge fish. I wouldnt know what to do.... Besides filet and fry that bad boy up!
