Long Island Towns Fights New Saltwater Fishing License

From the East Hampton Star:

On Sept. 30 [New York’s new saltwater fishing license] . . . requirement was temporarily nullified at the request of trustees from the Towns of Southampton, East Hampton, and Shelter Island.

Since then, the Towns of Huntington, Oyster Bay, and Brookhaven have joined the action [and are] . . . seeking a permanent injunction with the support of Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. of Sag Harbor.

The trustees of towns with roots that go back to colonial times claim that home rule authority. . . exempt their residents from a state saltwater fishing license.

We just had a similar issue here in NJ. Luckily my local politicians(d) stood with us outdoorsmen and fought to nullify the proposal for now. With a bankrupt state, they have increasingly looked to outdoorsmen to help raise revenue. This is bittersweet because they are finally recognizing us as a powerful and influential group, though they are doing so by taxing us!

steve182, as a fellow jerseyite i gota tell ya, the license fees, permits, buck tags, and various stamps has made more outlaws and driven me out of bow hunting almost completely. last year that i bought all the stamps licenses, permits etc.., i spent over $200 to hunt here. i go to maine for 2 weeks a year and spend half that to hunt. all the saltwater license is for is to raise money for the state. it isnt used for conservation and the state doesnt stock the ocean.
