If you want to to take your fly fishing experience to the ragged edge of reason, here’s your chance.

My good friend, Conway Bowman, the man who pioneered fly fishing for mako sharks off San Diego, just wrote “The Orvis Guide to Beginning Saltwater Fly Fishing: 101 Tips for the Absolute Beginner.” It’s a fabulous book. You should buy it, whether you already dabble in the salt, or are thinking of doing so. The lessons are clean and simple, the words are heartfelt and honest.

I have known Conway for years, and once wrote a story, “Fly Fishing Gone Mad” for Field & Stream about his game. That experience changed the way I think about fly fishing forever.

Thing is, while you might think that, because he plays with sharks for fun (and lets them all go, by the way), Bowman is a bit twisted… that he has a death wish, or a hopelessly incurable adrenaline habit. Nothing could be further from the truth. He is one of the most dedicated, skilled, pragmatic saltwater anglers I know. He has the world-record redfish caught on a fly to prove that. His book reflects the essence of someone who really understands fishing in the ocean, and moreover, a candid desire to share that passion with everyone. It covers everything from gear to knots, bonefish to striped bass.

But you don’t have to buy the book to win the prize. Simply go to bowmanbluewater.com and click on the “Saltwater Fly Fishing Tip” link. Write up your favorite fly fishing tip, and provide your contact information. You can also enter the contest at Orvis stores.

The winner gets two nights of lodging at the Kona Kai Resort in the Point Loma area of San Diego, as well as a new Orvis 9-foot, 4-piece, 9-weight “Access” Rod, an “Access” Mid-Arbor fly reel, and a fly fishing day on the water, tangling with mako sharks, that is sure to rock your socks off. If one of you folks wins this, I want to hear about it and I want photos.

Good luck!
