Seems odd to me that a hunting blog is praising "No Trespassing" signs. Private land is private and hunters and fishermen should always ask first.
Still, there is no sense in getting excited about hunting becoming the domain of the rich and privileged.
These are the kind of signs that do nothing to keep poachers out while scaring young hunters from asking permission.
Used to be, signs said "Posted," it still meant private, but it also meant you could ask to hunt. Chances were good that you could get permission. If the answer was "no" then you probably didn't ask there again.
In my opinion, this kind of signage is what happens when city-folk move into the country. It's not neighborly and it's detrimental to the future of hunting and fishing.
In most states, it probably doesn't meet the requirements for a trespassing sign and wouldn't allow you to prosecute anyone if they did trespass.

Cast my vote for the first one, but they're both good.
Hey GregMc, You're right about the legal thing. Most states have specific requirements for trespass signs--these wouldn't cut it. But you gotta admit that they get the point across ... and a little humor won't hurt anybody. Bullets hurt, laughter usually doesn't unless you just took a bullet to the ribs for ignoring one of these signs.

+2 Good Comment? | | Report
from GregMc wrote 2 years 47 weeks ago

I'm all for humor, but I see hunting opportunity on the decline. The relationship between people and the land is changing. Our grandparents owned the land, but they didn't believe they owned the game. Most landowners then would let responsible and polite people hunt on their property.
Now, a lot of landowners seem to think they own the game and they won't even let their neighbors hunt, much less polite strangers or young people.
When only rich people get to hunt, less young people will hunt and our tradition will quickly die out.
Eventually, this will mean the end of hunting in all but a few places with public lands.
I like a funny sign as much as the next guy, this topic just depresses me too much for laughs.

+6 Good Comment? | | Report
from seadog wrote 2 years 47 weeks ago

GregMc, sounds like we agree more than disagree. I'm very concerned about lost hunting opportunities. The population goes up & available land disappears. The price to lease private land for hunting keeps going up. More of us are competing to use the same public land. Man, this is depressing. Not your fault--you just reminded me of the sad truth.

This sign is a little too intellectual, if you ask me. By the time the average Obama voter figures out that meeting God quickly is a euphemism for being killed, he'd be a hundred yards on the wrong side of the fence and the homeowner's crosshairs would be on him; messy. No sense taxing criminal brains if you don't have to. I prefer signs like "IF YOU TRESPASS HERE YOU WILL BE SHOT."

Sorry..I am a prude, or maybe just a bit "English" about this issue. I don't find humor in a threat to seriously hurt or kill someone for trespass. I know...lighten up Ralphie boy, but there have been cases here, in MI, of people being shot because they walked on someone's property during hunting season. Would anyone really shoot at someone for trespassing in the middle of a hayfield?
To me, it's just nonsense humor.

There have been many a good point made in regards to such signage, and I respect the concept of not diminishing the sport, and legal this' and that's... but the fact still remains, a good humorus sign is a good way to get the message across. I gaurantee that people will remember a funny or clever sign long after they remember a dime a dozen sign...so it can be light hearted and funny, with a serious message. Would-be trespassers will stop and think (okay, some of them think), "Is this sign a joke, or will I end up bent over a table getting 4 shot tweezed out of my ass cheeks?"

While I do find both signs darkly humorous, I can only shudder at what the consequences would be here if I shot someone merely for tresspassing. If someone is both tresspassing AND assaulting me or mine with deadly force, then I might be considered justified in opening fire. Both of these signs suggest the homeowner is prone to taking random long range potshots at individuals by their border fences and is both unstable and sociopathic. What is the sign poster have that is so precious as to threaten the lives of strangers for? Is the fella who posted the sign referencing prayer and meeting the Lord supposedly a Christian? What part of the New Testiment is "kill all tresspassers " found in? So unfriendly.

The thing that I like about this sign is the inferences...there is a God...violate our rights by trespassing, and you will be introduced, directly. It does not come and say we will shoot you, however. This is for the reflective, thoughtful violator, whom we suppose can....read.

We like it.

Who is to say that at the very moment trespassers cut down your fence to get their quads in or leave the gate open and let your cattle out, the land owner decides to sight in his rifle, sorta in that general area? If the trespasser cannot read the signs, maybe that "angry bee" sound close by will get his attention. I have to come down on the side of the farmer and rancher on this one.

I'd probably ask this person for the oppertunity to hunt, if only to meet them. They have a good sense of humor (fingers crossed here), and rather than being a sociopath, are probably pretty grounded. People who put the thought into a sign like this obviously appreciate what they have, probably even more than those who post the generic signs. And as such would probaly recognize a fellow "connesoure" like myself, and allow me access to there phenomenal private creek, land, lake, whatever. Of course I could be wrong, and then the question becomes, how do you make your approach? Do you risk getting shot on the way to knock on the front door to introduce yourself and ask permission, do you stake out the driveway, and catch them on there way out, or do you cold call? MAybe you follow them into town, and then at the coffee shop/resturaunt/store/bar- say "hey aren't you the one with that sign..."

In Texas trespassing is a misdemeanor. Shooting someone for trespassing can/will get you in a heap of trouble --unless you feel your safety/life is threatened. In Texas you must request that the trespasser leave your property immeditely. If he does, that is all you can do at that time, except notify the local authorities. Should he threaten you in any way you may defend yourself! Should the person(s) return, you may have him/her arrested, but unless your life or property (theft) is threatened, you better have no witnesses and a good defense attorney if you shoot/kill someone who is only trespassing! I know the specific as I 911-ed a complaint for a trespassing photographer/salesperson whom I just happened to see driving past my home down into my 'back 40'. I subsequently caught up with and confronted that person, and called the sheriff. I was told (in person, and subsequently read for myself) the specifics of the statutes. Be careful how you proceed, unless there is an attempted or actual break in, like a chain cut on a locked gate, you only have the right to run them off, unless you are threatened. Signs are great but actions should be considered carefully.

My dog does a good job if he's with me, but me living a mile away he sometimes goes bsck home unless in my ground blind,. Poachers and tresspasses or my rwo wors enemies, and wih the #'s increasing yearly, appears the game Comm is helpless or lazy as been reported many times. If have the same problems this season, will handle anyway I can. I don;t spend 5K a year on soil plots for outsiders to reap the benefits. I sort of favor this one but only by a miniscule amount. I'm going to make some for myself and put them around the camp for entertainment value.

The trouble with hard core poachers is that some of them may shoot back and there isn't a deer in the world worth me getting shot over or having my land and camp burned out. I post my land, make my presence known and call the Game Warden or Sheriff when necessary. When I confront a trespasser I tell them to leave and to expect the law if they come back. I am always openly armed but do not act threateningly or inflame any encounter.

Don't get me wrong---I hate poachers worse than the devil hates holy water but I'm not going to start a fight if I can't be on hand to fight it all the time. I stand to lose a lot more than there is to win.

I'm with Ralph, Both signs are funny but thats all the farther anyone should go with it. You might even get a visit from a state trooper who might not think your display is funny at all and could possibly explain the legal implications of advertising such a threat of bodily injury.

I like the first one better. There's private land that you can ask permission to hunt, and get it, and there's private land that you can't. I'd think this kind of sign would let you know where NOT to waste your time asking.

The thing that I like about this sign is the inferences...there is a God...violate our rights by trespassing, and you will be introduced, directly. It does not come and say we will shoot you, however. This is for the reflective, thoughtful violator, whom we suppose can....read.

We like it.

I like both of them, but the Fist is more Humorous , and makes the point without implying a threat I don't really think either person is making a serious threat, just saying "Ask me first". I have rarely been refused permission to hunt on land if I asked politely.

Like everything else, the younger generations don't have much concept of "private Property" -- unless someone jacks their Ipod. I think many people use signs like this are there to make a point more than make a threat. But -- once it's posted, there's a bluff that somebody just might call.

VOSS Signs, Manilaus(sp?) New Jersy has the "violators will be shot, survivors will be prosecuted" version. I bought several. Marked out "prosecuted" & inserted "violated" at the end. It stopped dirt bikers/4 wheelers from tearing up land or riding down pipeline right of way. A neighbor called to ask if it was "all right to drive down the road in front of that sign".

One thing I like about this blog is the pervasive sense of humor, while repscting gun safety and the sanctity of game and outdoors. As interesting in the equal and different humor in both signs, is the "sign of the times" in the comments. I agree with Greg, and the reputation we must uphold and maintain as sportsmen is referenced in the comments; again, given the right and priviledge to hunt and shoot, antis, and ever present legal tension.
Thanks!

bOTH WERE GREAT: Which ever works to serve is purpose is my choice. My choice being 2 flat tires if the trespasser's vehicle is near by, if not then a couple of shots over their heads of heavy #'s 4ths works good. I had my fences cut for them to launch a smallboat, wish I had been present, would be one sunk boat and some wet Asses.

Sure, with signs like these us gun owners will only be seen as a bunch of nutcases just hoping to take shots at someone. It will do nothing for our credibility. Trespassing may be wrong, but I don't think anyone would be given an easy ride with the legal system if one simply shot someone for trespassing.
