Petzal: Fun Gun Wisdom from the World Wide Web

By David E. Petzal

Clint Smith, Director of Thunder Ranch, is part drill instructor, part stand up comic. Here are a few of his observations on tactics, firearms, self defense and life as we know it in the civilized world.

1) "The handgun would not be my choice of weapon if I knew I was going to a fight....I'd choose a rifle, a shotgun, an RPG or an atomic bomb instead."

2) "The two most important rules in a gunfight are: Always cheat and Always win."

3) "Every time I teach a class, I discover I don't know something."

4) "Don't forget, incoming fire has the right of way."

5) "Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets. I may get killed with my own gun, but he's gonna have to beat me to death with it, cause it's going to be empty."

6) "If you're not shootin', you should be loadin'. If you're not loadin', you should be movin', if you're not movin', someone's gonna cut your head off and put it on a stick."

7) "When you reload in low light encounters, don't put your flashlight in your back pocket... If you light yourself up, you'll look like an angel or the tooth fairy...and you're gonna be one of 'em pretty soon."

8) "Do something. It may be wrong, but do something."

9) "Nothing adds a little class to a sniper course like a babe in a Ghilliesuit."

10) "Shoot what's available, as long as it's available, until something else becomes available."

11)
"If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. That's ridiculous. If I have a gun, what in the hell do I have to be paranoid for."

12) "Don't shoot fast, shoot good."

13) "You can say 'stop' or 'alto' or use any other word you think will work but I've found that a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much the universal language."

14) "You have the rest of your life to solve your problems. How long you live depends on how well you do it."

15) "You cannot save the planet. You may be able to save yourself and your family."

And here's some more gun wisdom from sources known and  unknown...

"The purpose of fighting is to win! There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either."

The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.'

An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.

The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.'

Beware the man who only has one gun. He probably knows how to use it!

"The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him."
-G. K. Chesterton

A people that values its privileges above its principles will soon lose both.

"Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not."
~ Thomas Jefferson

"A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of Americathan the whole force of the common enemy." --Samuel Adams

The Dillon M134D Gatling Gun is the finest small caliber, defense suppression weapon available. It is a six barreled, electrically driven machine gun chambered in 7.62mm NATO and fires at a fixed rate of 3,000 shots per minute. Gatling Guns typically feed from a 3,000 or 4,400 round magazine. They are capable of long periods of continuous fire without threat or damage to the weapon making them an excellent choice for defensive suppression.

Lets see?

3000 rounds per minute

say even at .35 cents per round

cost to shoot, $1050 per minute , plus wear and tear on parts!

CJ there hasn't been a "free market" since before Cheney met with Enron to fix California natural gas rates. When we bail out banks and car manufacturers it isn't "free market". When industries and agribusiness demand subsidies it ain't free market and when the nation gets stripped of industry because a tiny percentage of magnates think they can make more money by paying third worlders to do the work, that ain't exactly free market either. We haven't had a "free market" in decades. Wake up dude.

"A nation that draws too broad a difference between it's scholars and it's warriors will have it's thinking done by cowards, and it's fighting done by fools. - Thucydides (471 BC - 400 BC)"--- fantastic quote. And we are just about there now.

I liked the 'old man' wisdom, too.

My favorite rule of gunfighting has always been Rule #1, "Have a gun." For the big-bore guys I like Corollary #1, "A .22 in your pocket is worth three .45s back at the house." Corollary #2 is "Better tried by 12 than carried by six." Corollary #3, from Massad Ayoob in response to #2, is "Better be acquitted by 12 than raped (in the prison shower) by six." Never forget that the law and our courts can take away the very things you defended from the attacker in the first place, and adjust your defense strategies accordingly.

From the late, great Bill Jordan on gunfighting:(from his book "No Second Place Winner")
"TAKE YOUR TIME, FAST."

Regarding Clint's observation of the universal language of a large muzzle pointed at the head; a game warden friend said it would make non-English speaking persons remember they could understand English after all.
Having learned that, I recently acquired a Saiga 12 ga. shotgun with 3 12 round clips for home and personal defense. In Texas, you don't need a permit to carry one of those alley sweepers in the truck. That's 432 total buckshot pellets when the clip runs out. A 20 round drum magazine is also available.

That is because most of our founders were fresh from a revolt against the GOV "Taxation without representation"
Whom sounds like a common theme...

In Vietnam, when the M-16 would fire till dry on one trigger pull, there were two ways to say the same thing:
"When in doubt, empty the magazine!"
or
"When in doubt, spray about."

The words "intelligent" and "articulate" are used together to describe an exceptional person, because both attributes do not commonly reside in the same person.

"When you throw the ball, three thing can happen - and two of them are bad."

You gents on my email list check out the sniper shot I sent you today. The goblin is holding a cocked revolver to a womans head. Watch his right eye closely as it disappears. This is what snipers train for.

Phil,

It is impossible, at least for me, to find your email address. I would like to send you a copy of my book. Maybe you will read it, say good things, and I will finally be able to afford to buy a gun from Freedom Arms.

This is the book. It has guns in it.
