Coyotes Attack Colorado Woman And Her Lab
By Dave Hurteau
From the Denver Post:
A 51-year-old woman was attacked by coyotes Saturday night as she walked her dog in southeast Denver, wildlife officials said.
The woman . . . told authorities she was walking her 75-pound Labrador retriever when they were surrounded by three coyotes.
Two of the coyotes attacked the dog, and the owner intervened. As she tried to defend the dog, a coyote scratched and bit the woman. . . .

Too many questions.
1. Were the coyotes starving?
2. Did they have a disease?
3. Was this right in/around coyote habitat and the lady was a tresspasser?
I need answers before i can trash somebody.

My 95-pound Lab will put 3 mangy coyotes on the run. He keeps all those varmints run off our place. Must have been a city dog.
Ain't no such thing as a human being "trespassing" on "wild animals land." To heck with the coyotes. And, She Should Carry.
Hmmm....seems that there would be more to the story. maybe she had raw bacon in her pocket.I shouldnt make light of the situation, its an unfortunate inccedent.
Ultimately, we are trespassers. Animals don't understand property lines and wildlife should not have cower in the bushes when we enter an area(although they usually do). Those coyotes were probably defending their turf against a rival dog and the lady got caught up in the natural order of the animal kingdom. A .223 and some good calling could prevent future problems though.
I have to agree with everyone above. I live just south in Colorado Springs and it's only a couple minutes drive to where nature and suburban sprawl collide. People that don't understand that they are sharing an area with wildlife are bound to have a less than pleasant interaction at some point.
PS I love the signs people hang up on the telephone poles around here looking for lost cats and small dogs. Catch a clue, they’re gone!
Yep, 'yote snacks
I live in the East Bay Hills of San Francisco and I'm the last home that butts up to the hills. See lots of coyote every day and every now and then a pack with 1 or 2 wild dogs follow far behind...very large dogs. Neighbors here are a bit slow...most cats and smaller 'pets' go missing and you can guess where they went! I agree with the fellow regarding 'carrying', except we're in the city limits and well, it's California!! Would love to move from here someday.
how stupid are those coyotes attack a 75lb lab they must of been starving
i wonder if this lady was one of those who tell us not to shoot the poor animals. if she was, now i bet she isn't. this is what happens if we stop hunting, but it will be on a much larger scale.
Hey dighunter,
there is no such thing as trespassing, because the wildlife does not "own" land. They live there. To say wildlife owns land is about as ridiculous as saying that bums and homeless illegals own the streets and dumpsters just because they live in and among them.
To SmittyCA,
Get a gun that takes a silencer.
Get a silencer.
Put silencer on said gun.
Then shoot the coyotes and Fidos-Gone-Foul from inside your house through an opened window, so the neighbors can't see or hear you doing it. Problem solved. :)
Just remember, in that kind of situation, you can't be running around right after the fact with your gun and camera: Go pick them up after dark, and don't be posting any 'hero shots' on Myspace, Facebook or videos on YouTube. Bad idea.
Also, for the official record, I never told you how to deal with problem predatory animals in your sub-urban backyard. Right?
You gotta love the city folks, they cry animal rights one minute then when a incident like this happens it was because they were tresspassing on the animals land. Everytime I hear the words "Animal Rights" I just want to go out and kill a hunderd of something-per Ted Nuget.
You have to remember that now that we humans don't go around killing off coyotes and other predators whenever we see them that they are going to stop being worried around humans.
In their world, there are predators and prey... and if they don't feel threatened by us, guess which one they start thinking we are in.
Carry. If you don't/can't carry, at least bring a stout walking stick. We humans got kind of short changed in the natural weapon department, so use your opposable thumb and you brain.
Hey Hunters, in Denver especially,...shoot them coyotes.
Good practice everywhere i believe
wow. dont here them attackin a fool grown human much
