Discussion Topic: Cedar Rapids Bans BB- And Air-Gun Carry
By Dave Hurteau
From The Gazette:
At the urging of police, the [Cedar Rapids] City Council has made it a misdemeanor offense to carry a loaded BB gun, air gun or pellet gun in the city limits. Juveniles cannot have the guns at all, loaded or unloaded, unless they are under adult supervision.
Police Capt. Bernie Walther said people have used the toy guns in hopes the victims will think they are real. It is easy for anyone, including a police officer, to mistake them for the real thing, he said.
"It makes no sense for anybody to be carrying one of things out in public, unless you're going to the range to do some shooting," Walther said. "That's all there is to it."
Is that all there is to it? What’s your reaction?

I agree that nobody should need one in public but kids like to have air-soft gun wars in my neighborhood, and the pellets dont have enough power to do any damage.
I was in my truck just yesterday, and saw someone carrying an "assault rifle". I slowed down to get a description and realized it was a kid.
I glanced back at the rifle only to see an orange tip on the "play rifle"
In a different situation with an officer of the law, I can only imagine the out-come.
There are some airsoft and paintball guns out there are eerily realistic.
When we were kids (my age group), real-looking guns were the rage. Nobody thought about them at all, including ones that looked absolutely real. Fanner-50, Johnny Eagle (I had the Magumba), and the infamous Tommy-gun with the ratcheting handle.
Then kids started showing them off to their friends. One of our neighbors in Georgia had an incident with a BB pistol that looked like a .357.
I thought that some time ago, "toy" guns that did not fire ammunition had to be a color other than black, and have an orange plug. Why isn't that in effect anymore?
It's too bad it has to come to this. I respect the judgement of the law enforcement officers but I think it's sad a few people have to ruin it for everyone else.
Hey 2Poppa, where you been? Haven't seen you post in a while!
While there is nobody more pro-2A than I am, I am appalled at the assault weapon look-alikes being toted by the kids for their air soft battles. They look real enough to get yourself shot!
Sad, They'll start with the small stuff then move to the "real" guns, you watch.
I'm against it 100%. Just another example of our fine government wanting to control it's flock.
I'd tell the police captain that if his officers can't tell the difference between and crazed lunitic with an assault rifle and a kid carrying a BB gun that they should find a new line of work.
In many towns you can't even shoot a pellet gun anymore. For that matter, there are quite a few towns where you can't shoot your bow anymore.
If you can't take 'em away, make it impossible to enjoy them.
I guess that's true for firearms and now pellet guns and bows as well.

I understand the concern for carrying the air guns in public, but what about shooting cans out in the back yard? Does this ban that activity as well?

A nasty bug decided my computer was for fodder and sent out over 174,000 e-mails in a 3-day period.
My internet provider realized I didn't have that many friends ... at least that is what the man from the company stated.
It's good to be back ... got to get my fix of F&S!
I'd have to say shoot them in the back yard and if you kid is going to carry it somewhere why not put it in a gun case? May save a lot of hysteria in todays PC world.
lIVE IN THE CITY, DEAL WITH THE CITY.
I can understand the police concern about thinking it is a real gun... when it comes to stuff like that, you don't mess around. But on the flip side, if you are dumb enough to be waiving a air rifle or BB gun around in the air in front of a police officer, I don't think you are going to be looking for a safe time. Also, they should just require all the airsoft and BB guns to have that orange marker on the tip to show that it is a fake that way there is no misunderstanding. Make that illegal. But the rule they have now is not going to stop criminals... they are criminals for a reason, they break the law... do you really think they are going to follow a law that makes it harder for them to commit their crime of choice of fooling people into thinking they have a real gun? C'mon now!
They city ordinance is too bad. I agree with those who stated that BB guns etc. should be distinctly different in appearance from real firearms. The last thing I want to see is some punk kid getting blasted by a paranoid cop for weilding an airsoft.
2pappa,welcome to the club, hope its fixed. As for the B-B guns, they don't need to carry them LOADED in public.
This is ridiculous. If someone is waving a bb/pellet gun around like a real gun, the intent is thereand they can use force as if it was a real gun. So, what difference does it make what law there is for law abiding citizens to not be able to play plinking with their kids! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!! Start small then ban em all. I dont care wht the damn law says, my kids have and will have bb guns and pellet guns and bows,,, and when they get older big guns, and pistols and whatever they want to enjoy. MAkes me sick, ya bunch o libs! and to hear some of you guy's who are pro 2A to agree???
To buckhunter:
Go to WalMart or Dick's sporting goods. You can get a BB gun in an absolutely real looking PPK/S, S&W 9mm, .45, or .357. If not for the CO2 cover on the bottom, you couldn't tell it was not real. And your hand/arm would cover that.
Anybody waving it around in public would pretty much be pretending it was a real one anyway.
So I could not fault any policeman who capped one of those idiots. Those guys have enough issues, especially in bigger cities.
Cedar Rapids?
Police Chief is more suited as a Meter Maid!
Clay,
I agree, but more like city garbage man. At least he won't have his hands in the cokie jar anymore.
I don't know what people think a law like that will accomplesh. Your still gonna have criminals on the streets, even if you do disarm the law abiding, bb toten tottlers. I think it's all part of government trying to brainwash our children into thinking guns are evil and they kill people.
