Minnesota Poacher Busted With World Record-Size 8-Point Buck

By Dave Hurteau

From the Outdoor News:
Minnesota conservation officers last week seized a record-book deer rack and on Thursday morning filed poaching charges against a man from Cannon Falls, Minn., in the case. . . .
According to the complaint, Troy Alan Reinke, 32, admitted to conservation officers that he had shot a small doe and a small buck on separate dates in early October, and failed to tag or register either of the deer. Reinke said he shot the large 8-point buck, with a 185 net green score, on Halloween evening. . . .

[According to the] Boone & Crockett Club . . . the rack likely could be a world-record rack for an 8-point deer.

I doubt that he was harvesting for his starving family. Max him out on penalties and, at the least, deny him a license for Life. Why not have him stand outside the courthouse for a week with a sign that says "I Poach because I want to" or some other sentiment.

jail time too or he'll just do it again. What good is loss of hunting license for life to a poacher? Specially one who doesn't abide by the rules and laws. He didn't need a license to poach.

I agree, the guy should be punished. Unfortunately, he'll probably end up w/ a fine and a slap on the wrist.

HOLY CRAP that is a big deer. I want the same thing you guys want life suspension of license but like someone already said he didn't need the license to poach to begin with so that does no good. You never know though if shot the doe and smaller buck for food but it is hard for me to believe that he shot that HUGE 8 for food. I guess I don't understand the point of poaching trophies. A. you cant brag to anyone for ever. B. you can't get it mounted unless you A do it yourself or B do an European Mount. Just my thoughts.

Tis a shame and poachers are a blight on honest Hunters and hunting.

This guy dishonored himself and his buck by his actions.

He deserves the max.

Walt Smith,That the true justice here . He will have nothing to show, but a severe fine.Sad fact is that deer will not receive a honorable mount or display.

Then give him six months in jail with a verry lonely convict for a cellie. Might encourage him to "Do right."

His penalty should be having him chained up at the front entrance of the local sporting goods store with a sign that says "I'm a poacher and I killed the biggest 8 pt. buck ever." I'm sure that would generate some nice discussions, make an example, and make other poachers think twice.

HOW SAD INDEED. A MAGNIFICENT ANIMAL TAKEN BY SOME BRAINLESS SOB. PERHAPS A WAY CAN BE FOUND TO ENTER THE DEER IN A SPECIAL CATEGORY. THE POACHER, WELL I CAN'T SAY IN THIS COMMENT WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO TO HIM!!!!!

I don't think we go far enough.
Don't just take his hunting rights but also his fishing rights. If he is a hard core fisherman it would make for a long summer.

Give him jail time. Take his guns away, and put him on felony probation so he will be checked all the time for guns!

To deadeyedick; the minnesota dnr can enter the buck in Boone and Crockett as a "pickup", the official state record mule deer here was poached and that is what the state decided to do. http://blog.kingsoutdoorworld.com/2005/11/01/potential-montana-state-rec... . Unfortunate that people decide that they need to deviate from fair chase and steal these animals from honest hunters. Only stiff fines as well as jail time will do any good.
