New Hampshire Hunter Ends Maine Amber Alert

By Dave Hurteau

From AOL News:
A 2-year-old girl whose temporary abduction sparked an Amber Alert in Maine on Monday is now safe at home again -- thanks to a passing hunter. . . .

On Tuesday afternoon, said WMUR/News 9, a hunter named Michael Grant was tramping through a wooded area not far from Milton, N.H., when he saw a familiar truck. Grant recognized both the make and license plate from television news reports. . . .

"I walked up to [the truck] and told [the driver] that I knew he was the gentleman [authorities] were looking for," Grant told WMUR. "[I] pretty much told him he had one of two choices. He could turn himself in or I could turn him in."

After a long, emotional conversation, Grant said, he persuaded [the man] to surrender to police.

Good for him...not everyone has the nerve to do the right thing anymore when it comes to confrontations. We always hear news reports of people screaming for help, only to be ignored by passersby who choose not to get involved. Job well done in saving this girl in need...a hero.

This guy is stronger than me.. If I found a guy who had abducted a 2 year old girl, I'm not sure I would have given him the same options.

I agree w/ SD Whitetail hntr, if I strolled upon a kidnapper while hunting, I don't think he'd have the option of 'turning himself in'. Great job by Mr. Grant though.

Kudos to Michael Grant for how he handled this. Guys, the kidnapper in this case was the girl's father. What he did was very wrong--he ignored the law & took matters into his own hands, but this is really a custody dispute over his daughter. There's a lot of emotion involved in these situations & parents sometimes make huge mistakes like this guy did. This is bad but it's a lot different from some creep grabbing a kid.

I'm glad he found the guy and the girl was returned safely to her parents.

He did the right thing and this should be on the mainstream media as well. It would dispell alot of the anti rhettoric.

On a similar note, there was a 15 year old boy who ran away in my city last fall. He was missing for over a month if i remeber correctly. There was organized searches for him that spanned throughout the city and nearby country side. The famous " man-tracker" even came to assist in the search. I believe the searches lasted about 2 weeks. With all the leads, and expertise they could not find the boy. Opening weekend of the shotgun hunt, two hunters found him, unfortunately deceased.

Good job to Mr. Grant! And my sympathies are going to be extended to the father of the little girl as well. When a father has to get involved with the legal system to get to see his kid, nobody ends up winning other than the lawyers and the mothers checking account. After going through the custody process myself, I'm convinced that in Minnesota at least, the mother would have to be caught shooting heroin while driving drunk on the way home from robbing the bank with her child not in car seat for a father to have a snowballs chance in hell of getting more than every other weekend visitation rights. Once a guy gets the notification that he is going to be in custody dispute, all it takes is about 2 hours of online browsing to become thoroughly convinced that sneaking the kid into canada or mexico is the only chance he will get to be a dad, and not a glorified babysitter that gets to pay for mommy's new dating habits. Not that I'm bitter or anything -- I got fairly lucky and have, as an ex, a woman that is actually more concerned about her son that herself.

I have been reading these posts, and with some of them I agree with and some of them, well I just do not understand-- as with anything, there is 2 sides and all we hear is the side of what the media wants us to hear and what they want to add to it for making a better story of their own. First of all, I am very happy that the young lady was found unhurt! Yes, us hunters, can claim another notch in our belt for a job well done! But none of us know, as Paul Harvey would say, "the rest of the story". Child custody battles can really take a toll on anybody- fathers and mothers alike! Yes, it was wrong to take matters into Ur own hands, but sometimes, U feel U have no other choice in the matter because no one wants to hear the real story about what has gone on in a relationship that has gone bad! I speak from experience, but am happy to say that the situation that my wife and I was in took a turn for the good and we decided to get the help we needed to put our family back together and raise our daughter together! I will not say that I did not have some of the same thoughts that could have drove this man into doing what he did-- not saying what he did was right-- but can say I can see how it could happen, and does not mean he is a bad person!
