Discussion Topic: Canadian Beauty Queen Stands Up For Seal Hunt
By Dave Hurteau
After wearing a sealskin coat during a November Newfoundland Santa Claus parade, 19-Year-old beauty queen Sarah Green was shocked to see herself smeared with blood and wielding a club over a pile of gore-stained seal carcasses in a doctored online photo posted on a anti-hunting Facebook page. Still, Miss Newfoundland and Labrador says she’s going hunting.
From The Canadian Press:
"It was gruesome. It was unnecessary ... when I saw the photo, of course my jaw dropped," she said in an interview. "I couldn't believe it, but it gave me a bigger motivation to stand up for the seal hunt. . . .
"It's been a part of our heritage for hundreds of years and there's no reason to be bashing it," she said.

Sad commentary about the "new" politically correct world, isn't it? Leave local traditions alone! If these anti's would spend this money on helping humans find medical cures instead of dabbling in such "causes" that would go a long way.
Stop and think about it a second, what qualifies a person that lives in a 'playacting' world to be smarter than these residents? Nothing, but their financial clout changes everything.
Thankfully common sense still lives at this website/magazine. Recently they pointed out that even plants feel pain, yet these celebrity type do-rights eat and smoke these to their heart's content!
+1 to Ms. Green.
Animalphiles at their usual antics. Petulant rich children with nothing to do but shriek "look at me" as the world passes them by.
You go girl! I'm all for swiling Neufie Queens just Like I'm all for Inupiat Whalers. If I lived up Newfoundland way, I'd want a sealskin coat myself!
By the way, Swiling is a very dangerous activity, out on the floes of the ice. The environment itself is the challenge. As far as Hackapiks go, If I can hit a rabbit in the head and kill it to eat, then why should I see a problem with a swiling hackapik? My only concern would be the sustainability of the hunt, that enough young seals escape to ensure that the hunt can continue in future years. If the seals get scarce then pull the plug, otherwise if brave man and women go onto the ice seeking sealskins in an old traditional way, let 'em! The more power to 'em, it is hard enough to live in Newfoundland!
way to stand up to those peta morons.
Sustainability of the harvest is the only issue for me. I don't think I could personally club a baby seal. A bit like drowning puppies for me. JMHO
"No compassionate person can observe the seal kill and still support it. What it represents is an archaic industry that is going nowhere but downhill. Countries around the world are shutting their borders to seal products."
That pisses me off.
The plague of humanity is our hypocrisy. Just because you don't watch the cow get plugged in the head and then bled out before you ate that burger does not mean it didn't happen. I can appreciate people who respect hunting, but would not want to kill something themselves. I can't stand to listen to people who spew lines about how hunting is unethical, barbaric, and wrong, and proceed to feast on farm raised meat. I once had a close friend who despised hunting, abhorred it. She said it was disgusting, and that us hunters only do it because we enjoy chasing down and killing innocent animals. She also ate meat. We also aren't friends anymore.
I am glad that their are reasonable people out there, even better than she is a "beauty queen" as it shakes off the stereotype. I could rant on for hours, but I won't.
Thank you for posting this.
* even better that ( not than)
I think she was the only person that was surprised!
Where's the photo?
I won't post it here, because I'm sure if the editors wanted it on here, they would have put it here, but if you google search Sara Green, it is the first thing that appears.
What she has to say about it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvooeJY7S_c
Heres my question, what calibre would you use for a seal hunt? would you shoot them from close or from afar?
I wonder if these PETA nuts have the stones to go and tell the Inuits/Eskimos and other tribes that they can't do the same thing?
Way to go .. I'm glad she took a stand and they actually backed down as far as the comment made by the council woman that said it was for attention.. I disagree it was about this 19yr old young lady and her postion on her rights and the stand she is making on the unjustified personal attack made by a bunch of immoral self serving loons (PETA)
First, way to go Sarah, we need more young ladies to take up the hunting/gun rights cause.
secondly, to all those worried about killing baby seals, killing WHITECOATS has not been allowed for years but the animalterrorists keep showing the pics anyway. and there is no shortage of seals for us or polar bears, their numbers have never been higher.
I won't be "clubbing my favorite baby seal with a lead-filled snowshoe" (thanks FZ) anytime soon, but I truly despise the antis' tactics and motivations. Good for her for standing up.
I have flushed better things down the toilet than PETA.
Let's look at this realistically. Your a baby seal in the Artic. You have a choice. You can die by:
a) starve to death
b) freeze to death
c) eaten alive by a polar bear
d) swift club to the head
Studies show 4 out of 5 baby seals choose d.
when it comes to hunting seal it was and still kinda is my primary "big game".. bring a boat, a diver with ecuipment and a 22-250 or similar in the us and here in norway where sealhunting have been internationally scorned bring a 270wsm.. i think its about perfect.. with 140 grains frangibles and exclusively headshots its lights-out from 15-300 yards.. and if u know seals enough to shoot them when they have inhaled a big lungfull of air they float for a minute or two.. :) if not, u gonna need the diver.. nothing but headshots on seals though.. blubber and strong physique will let them get back in the water and sink to theire death.. more details can be shared if wanted.. i know my stuff pretty well :P
ingebritsen, does anybody hunt seal with crossbows? I'd think using something like a bowfishing rig with a line you could haul the meat in without needing the diver. Course I an't never hunted seal and you likely do every season, so I will fess my ignorance here. Has anybody thought of using a crossbow bolt with a CO2 cartrige that would release gas into the seal and guarantee that it floats?
Don't mind my speculations, I just like to think about solutions to interesting problems, Good luck up in Norway, I'd love to visit the fiords! May your feet stay warm and dry!
I lived in Newfoundland for most of my formative years.
Until very recently it was an extremely difficult place to make a living. My grandfather walked over 100 miles on snowshoes in the winter to apply for a position as a sealer. He survived the terrible Newfoundland Sealing Disaster of the early 20th.century. A large numer of men died after gettimg trapped on the ice floes while sealing in the Gulf of the Saint Lawrence and got caught in a 3 day raging blizzard, most freezing to death or falling into Davy Jone's locker and drowning. My grandfather was there and survived it. He froze off all his toes from one foot and most off the other. He was about 26 years old. He was one of the lucky ones and as tuff as nails!!! A lot more survivors were more badly injured then he was!!!
Anyone who has been to Nfld. or knows someone from there
will likely tell you that we are the type of people who will really give you the shirt off our backs even though it may be the only shirt we own. Newfoundland is semi- artic and has very little good agricultural land. It is cold , has short cool summers and long cold winters often with tremendous amounts of snow. To survive in such a place one has to take any advantage that nature may provide often at great personal risk. Hunting, fishing, trapping ,picking berries and harvesting sea mammals to survive is the history of the people who live there. It may be difficult for those who don't have such a history to understand. For Greenpiece and Peta and others to label us as cruel and mislead the world for political correctness, to make money claiming the seals are on the edge of extinction is an outright lie. There are many millions of seals and they are being seen in places where they have been absent in for over 100 years.
The baby Whitecoats covered in blood on the ice make graphic pictures but this was outlawed many years ago and is illegal. Seals are shot with high powered rifles and the hunt is one of the most monitored and legislated on the planet. Still lies are submitted by those with the most to gain and the most to lose. If the truth was out there most people would not be sending donations to stop something that has not occurred for many years.
A hackapic is a pick handle with a stout metal spike on the head at a 90 degree angle. One swing drove the spike through the head of the seal puncturing and crushing the skull--not pretty but extremely effective and virtually 100 percent fatal. Seal meat is consumed as a special treat by many in Nfld and has proven health bennifits.
Many Americans remember when 911 occurred and your planes were forced to land where ever they could how the people of Gander Nfld.came to their rescue. So many Americans were taken in ,fed, clothed etc. by the residents, that to this very day friendships exist and are maintained that were created during that horiffic time. That is the type of people we are. We do not appreciate the imasges some in the Animal Rights Movements paint of us! These same organizations dare not go after Aboriginal Hunters whohunt seals as this would not be acceptable yet they persist to come after us and something we have traditionally and historically done
for over 500 years.
I would love to visit Newfoundland. I am one of those types who sees no point in going South to loll about in placid warm places, I'd rather look North. And all those books I read by Farley Mowatt have only increased my interest. Newfoundlands folk music scene is another great talking (singing) point. I didn't know the Hackapik was outlawed, sounds like a useful multitool to me. Good luck and may you make it through the winter without mishaps.
PETA'S latst attack in Canada was a few days ago. An
American woman creme pied our Minister of Fisheries as a protest against the Seal Hunt. She has been charged with assualt. If convicted in the courts, she could end up with a criminal record which could stop her from legally crossing into Canada again. Some have suggested PETA should be labeled as a "Terrorist" organization to prevent them from operating here. Perhaps that would be going too far. But I certainly understand the sentiment!!! I wish PETA would just be honest and quit lying about our Seal Hunt to trick people into contributing money. PETA keeps repeating the same lies over and over. The seals are in no danger of extinction from the seal harvest. The seal population has now grown to the point where they are becomming pests from the point of view of Commercial Fishermen. Seals are doing a lot of dammage to fishing gear when trying to steal fish from it. The population of seals on the East coast of Canada numbers in the many millions--- in absolutely no danger of extinction from the hunt!!!!!
i wouldnt recommend hunting seals with darts of any kind or with lines to tow the carcass back.. why would u wanna go archaic when a rifle used properly workd so well??
besides the exploding whaling harpoon is about a hundred years old, norwegian, and works perfectly :)
And u can get away with only a big hoock and a line and a bit of luck.. but if u wanna be sure and do it right u get a diver friend to help u ;)
