Returning Soldiers Could Get Special Deer Season
By Dave Hurteau
From the Wisconsin State Journal:
Even before he got back from Iraq, Sgt. Kevin Johnson had deer hunting on his mind. So Johnson… wrote Wisconsin lawmakers with an idea: Establish a special deer season for the thousands of returning soldiers who missed the chance to hunt this fall… .
This week, legislation was introduced that could grant Johnson his wish. It would create an additional gun deer season from Feb. 4 through Feb. 7 for Wisconsin residents who were out of state serving on active duty in the U.S. armed forces or National Guard during the regular season Nov. 21-29.

Good idea for all states,.
Nice, They are serving for the country, it's the least that could be done.
These guys deserve this hunt. No license required.
That would be a great gesture to our people. Other states should take notice of this.
I'm all in favor of supporting our troops, but this strikes me as playing politics with the deer season - after hearing all the complaints about the Wisconsin DNR in recent months, it doesn't sound like Wisconsin is going to get its act together anytime soon.
A great idea. Let's go one step further and get some prime real estate for them to hunt. I'm sure there will be plenty of land owners open to this idea.
this is a very good idea, other states should also adopt this policy, they risk their lives everyday, they should still get to enjoy their time in the woods.
I don't dispute it sounds like a good idea for the men/women of the military, but is it a good idea for the deer herd?
The bucks have dropped their racks, the does are pregnant and the entire herd is under winter stress and @ their lowest body weights of the year.
What a great idea! When I was in the Marines and deployed over in Iraq I missed out on deer season. A extra season for everyone returning over seas are the least we can do for them. I think every state should do this.
I agree with jjas its a great gesture for our troops, who I support, but I believe it is not the right time of year for the deer. Lawmakers should leave the decision up to the areas Game Management Office or DNR.
Feb. 4 through Feb. 7?
WHY SO SHORT!
Should have been Feb 4 thru 28, they deserve it!!!
They certainly deserve it. But it is a bad time of year. I understand they set it for when the soldiers return which is considerate but still bad timing. Perhaps a better idea would be to provide all returning troops the option at a free license for the following year. Hell they should never have to pay for a license. They're the reason we can own our guns and carry them into the woods to hunt deer.
Great idea! I think they should be able to hunt for the first month they get back from where they were serving and aloud to bag 3 deer. Its the least we can do for our service men and women! I hope every state does this in the future.
That is great I cant count how many times over the last few years I could only wish I could make the hunting season. Only to say well next year then wind up doing field training exercises or can't take leave etc so could only do quick unscouted hunts on the weekend with leftover tags.
This is a great thing they are doing you can't imagine how much a little time alone or with a good friend in the field hunting can relax and relieve the stress collected over 12-15 mos in a combat zone. My applause
jjas,
excellent point does make one think
guys just in it is sadly not going to happen
i think it would be ok because
a lot of deer wont be taken and they are soldiers who deserve more
WOW, What an awesome opportunity and way to say thank you if it passes and in the thought and consideration alone.
Brittle,
Thanks for the update I was hoping my fellow Soldiers would get some good relax time in.
I forgot to mention...One thing Colorado has done is to give a preferene point to Soldiers in Iraq/Afghan. I thought that was very nice it helped me out alot
its about time the soldiers were showed some respect by the lawmakers sitting in their offices trying to send the soldiers to jail each time they shoot somebody who is trying to kill them, and for defending our country....
Great idea! They deserve it.
WHAT A GREAT IDEA THEY SHOULD DO THIS FOR ALL STATES
Hell, throw in a coupon for a box of ammo, too.
awesome idea. i fully support it. and thank you to all serving
It would be an awesome way to show appreciation to our troops. They should give them a full week with a free tags.
I agree that its a noble idea. I've missed several seasons myself due to deployment but I don't think its in the best interest of the deer herd no matter which state you are in. Maybe a better idea would be a free turkey tag or a special turkey season.
On, Wisconsin! Attaboy!
I agree with Cooper. Give them a good and long time to go hunting.
How many servicemen and women are we talking about?
I like the concept, doubt the numbers of hunters would impact the deer herd significantly.
The gesture means a lot; however, I would rather see this subset of hunter have access to make up hunt in October or November.
I'm a Vietnam veteran and I would like to see the returning servicemen and women get treated better that we did in the 60's and 70's. I would like to see a special deer season or special turkey season for them. That is the least we could do for someone putting their life on the line for us everyday. It seems like our lawmakers don't really care about anyone except themselves.
I think that it is great because they can't choose when they leave. The risk there lives to keep us free but can't enjoy a day of hunting because the were not in the country.
I dont agree with the way this has been set up. They can now hunt anytime between now and sept. I dont agree with this time span. End of April and you see this big doe and take her..oh really wasnt that big after you take out the 2 little fawns she was carrying or the doe you take in May and the 2 little fawns are left behind.

Excellent Idea.
I can see how they would want to come home and go hunting. If I were in their shoes I would too, but I live in missouri and they have got the deer seasons so screwed up already that I don't think it would be a good idea at all. At least not here anyway.
Great idea.
I'm pretty lucky, I'll be returning to northern Virginia from Afghanistan in March, where the urban archery season goes until the last Saturday in March every year. I should have about a week to find a day to sneak off for few hours in a tree stand.
Great idea!
Fantastic!! My son is out now, but did 7 tours in Iraq. These men and women put their lives on the line, and on hold for their country. I am proud to say that I live in Wisconsin, and that our state is showing their appreciation. If you are looking for hunting and fishing trips, I use a veteran owned and operated directory, www.huntfishguide.com These guys are all veterans, and most were Rangers. We need to do everything we can to support our troops.
Great Idea!!! I hope all the states follow Wisconsin's lead.
