Merwin: 100-Pound Blue Shark Caught on Barbie Rod
By John Merwin
Some years back I wrote a Fishing Column in our print edition about fishing with Barbie rods just to see what was possible with kiddie-style spincast outfits. Since then, I’ve heard of 20-pound catfish caught with this dinky gear, and even a 50-pound black drum. But nothing tops this latest Barbie news.
An angler fishing during a recent shark tournament off Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, caught a 100-pound blue shark on a Barbie-style rig. Yes, really! Here’s the video to prove it.
Okay, I know that blue sharks aren’t the toughest fighters on the end of a line. If this had been a hard-running, high-leaping mako shark, Barbie’s proverbial goose would have been cooked but good. But still, a 100-pound fish is a 100-pound fish, and I give the angler lots of credit for trying in the first place and for pulling it off.
In case you’re wondering about Barbie’s muscles, I once dead-lifted a 16-pound weight with a Barbie rod without breaking it. So there’s plenty of pull available. And I dare say this angler replaced the chintzy mono that comes on the reel with something stronger.
So far, this is the largest Barbie-caught fish that I’ve heard of. Maybe even a record if anyone were keeping track. So perhaps there’s a moral here. Like don’t mess with Barbie!

Now theres an idea. They should create a new tackle record, biggest fish on a barbie rod.
That's a cool video.
well im off to buy a barbie rod.
That is a tough little rod.
I will have a new respect when I see Barbie rods in Cabelas.Oh and I got an idea,"Barbie Rod Sturgeon Tournament".
LOL thats great. That should help with their sales.
ive seen i guy with with his barbie rod land a 30 lb carp. i really thought that was the max... the reel was pretty much smoking. thats amazing the pole didnt break!
It makes me wonder why I paid so much for my rod and reel.
A question for John Merwin:
Suppose you're fishing somewhere, with practically no current in the water. You hook a fish.
Just how hard does a fish pull? I'm sure that there are species differences but how is pull related to the weight of the fish? 10%? 25%?
"Come on Barbi, Let's go Party !"(From Barbi Girl-The Plastics).
That was fun, funny and impressive.
My favorite is a snoopy rod for fishing off a kayak. Its short, limber, and good little reel and above all, easy to store while on the river.
If that size fish can be caught on a barbie rod.... I wonder what I could do with a spiderman rod.
I'll be taking it after steelhead this spring! ;)
I HAVE BEEN AN AVID FISHERMAN ALL MY LIFE AND HAVE EVEN CAUGHT FISH OFF OF A HANDLINE OFFSHORE ON OILRIGS
BUT THE BARBIE BEAT IT ALL GONNA GET ONE FOTR THE WHOLE
FAMILY FOR X-MAS ANYONE LAUGHS ILL SHOW THEM THIS VIDIEO WHICH I INTEND TO SAVE RICOSHAY
One good field test
I was once at Lake Anna in the spring and there was a bass tournament going on. The pros had caught very little (biggest fish ~2 lb.)
Some kid with a Snoopy pole was taken by his Dad just around the corner with a 6' canoe where he proceeded to catch an 8 lb. bass. He couldn't even hold it up for the picture.
This shark is better though!

I bet that shark's buddies never let him hear the end of it. "HAHA you got caught on a Barbie rod! Loser!"
LOL, can't believe that video made it this far!!! I'm the angler in the video, I caught that shark during the monster shark tournament on Marthas Vinyard. We had caught 2 nice makos early that morning but neither were weighable fish, then the blue sharks moved in, it was one after another for hours.
Thats when I pulled out my daughters barbie rod spooled up with 30lb power pro braid
and a 50lb mono leader, the shark came right in for the piece of bluefish and the game was on. He must have been sitting back in the slick filling up on chunks for awhile because he didn't exactly put on a fight at first, he finally woke up and made a good run, figuring for sure I'd get spooled I tightned the drag and to my amazment it stopped him...
It was all in fun out of boredom of catching blue sharks all day, who knew thousands of people would enjoy watching a guy catch a shark on a $10 barbie rod...
By the way, I tested the drag on barbie, 28 pounds using 50lb braid, next season where trying for bluefin tuna with her... :)
Enjoy
Todd
I thought this was going to show a little girl and her Barbie rod. Who cares about this sob.
I would do anything to catch a shark on any set up. I've never even seen one. OK... who wants to take the MT guy shark fishing
In a way i kinda think this is a photo shop deal somehow but i'm not sure
All right, so it's defiantly a blue and a Barbie, but this isn't a fairy tail. I'll bet any money that that fish is under eighty pounds. LOL but it still isn't the big 100.
