New York Hunter Bags Trophy Montana. . . Llama!?
By Dave Hurteau
From the Billings Gazette:
A New York hunter may be feeling a bit sheepish after mistaking a feral llama in Paradise Valley for a Rocky Mountain elk, but he apparently did not violate any laws.
Rusty Saunders of Fort Edward, N.Y., called a Fish, Wildlife and Parks warden in Livingston in November to turn himself in after shooting the llama, according to Mel Frost, FWP information officer in Bozeman.

I don't see how someone could mistake a llama for an elk, but I wasn't there. He did field dress it and notch his tag which tells me he really must have thought he shot an elk. I do have to give him points for honesty and turning himself in. I think he will receive adequate punishment from the lampooning on various blogs and you tube. Nuff said.
He did everything right except not knowing what he was shooting at. Not knowing what he was shooting at??? At least he's a pretty good shot and would survive in an emergency situation. I hope llama is palatable.
well at least it wasn't a person
wow, this is why I hunt on private and very restricted private land!
the guy is definitely a tool. Kinda funny how these kinds of stories always seem to revolve around guys from the north east. Not sure if I've ever read "A guy from Kentucky shot a cow and tagged it with a bison permit"...
if he couldnt identify it it could have just as likely been one of use instead of the llama, but it is kinda funny.
In defense of hunters from the NE, I've seen all manner of two and four legged creatures go by that were not my intended targets and can't say that I ever drew or hit my safety for any of them. You'd be amazed at how many fawn colored dogs wander the woods of suburbia. However, I'll agree that these stories do seem to occur more in my corner of the country. As Mr. Dave H. once brilliantly pointed out, there are morons among us. Based on some of the other threads however, every hunter in the woods is another successful recruit right? Right....
living in Montana, this is the kind of story we all both laugh and cry about. laugh because he was so damned dumb, and cry because we know there are more like him back east.
Just goes to show you should always make sure of your target
Come on,,,, Ive never hunted elk or (llama)but I'm sure that I know the difference.
Don
stupid easterners. two years back a guy came from kentucky to my homestate of idaho and mistakenly shot a grizzly bear while hunting black bears. The most incredible part is that they let him off the hook, I'd be sitting in prison right now had it been me. I hope that this llama hunter never lives this one down.
I've had a llama before and I could see mistaking it for a cow elk if it's head is behind pines. But that would have to be a long ways away from the shooter because the fur is so different.
LOL, I heard of a group of hunters here in NY who shot a goat & didn't know it wasn't a deer till the cops saw it when thye stopped for pizza. Arrests all around...
Here's a link to some pix. I think it is okay to post a link.

Nice rug. But what does llama taste like?
I'm laughing and crying at the same time.
The llama photos have been making the rounds in Wyoming. Reminds me of the Boots Reynolds print showing a hunter standing beside his dead mule who has a steaming bullet hole in his head. A huntress is in front of the mule with a smoking rifle. The hunter is saying something like "Lady you can have your elk but just let me get my saddle off him." Boots has some great humerous art work and I think you can find them if you Google. He did some for a few of Zumbo's books.
I saw this in an email and wasnt sure if it was true or not. I wonder how much this guy paid to get the "elk" of a lifetime? At least he did the respectable thing and turned himself in...even if he has animal identity issues his heart is in the right place.
I saw the photos and the notched tag. What a hoot! I think the ridicule is justice served! What a doofus.
I heard of a fella here in the NC Piedmont that shot a turkey. He drove the turkey to check it in. He was so proud of that turkey that nobody at the checkpoint had the heart to tell him it was a buzzard.
a llama for an elk??? this guy shouldnt be allowed to hunt anymore either that or he should have his eyes checked. fricken rediculous
I know it easy to find faults with others when in today's society everybody is so perfect. Nobody knows the scenerio in which Mr. Saunders shot this animal or how far away he was.I would like to appluad that Mr. Saunders was man enough to turn himself in, where as most of you would have hid it and moved on so you wouldn't have to face the consequences.I don't feel that he should be punished for the rest of his life while everybody takes cheap shots at him.
