The Compound

Still hunting

Uploaded on January 26, 2009

Does anyone have good tatics for still hunting with a recurve / compound? Do you consider spot and stalk different than still hunting?

I got my first deer with a bow by still hunting into my stand for an afternoon hunt. The key is seeing the deer before they see you, if you have that advantage getting close is not that hard, just go slowly and carefully.

Here's a tip. When the wind isn't blowing, try hunting on the ground. Your scent will not spread as much than if your in a stand for some reason. If there is a breeze or wind, if you hunt in a tree stand you scent will supposedly carry over the deer.

Always remember to be almost motionless. Just this year I had an 8 point come just 5 yards away from me by being a "statue". Sadly, I couldn't shoot it because I had already harvested a nine point with my rifle.

The scent tip is just something I've heard. I usually hunt out of a blind or backed up against a tree.

I think of spot and stalk as looking for game through optics then pursueing them. Still hunting is just going into the woods and gettin after it.

If you still hunt it helps if the ground is wet or quiet. Always play the wind and know the trails. Everytime I think I'm going to still hunt I end up just waiting downwind from a common trail.

If you want a trophy buck, making a stand is most appropriate most of the time. However, for adventure in an area where you are sure you won't encounter any other hunters, still hunting, particularly on a drizzly day, is hard to beat. Sitting and waiting can feel antithetical to hunting, whereas sneaking around with a rifle or bow, and making the occasional stand en route, is hunting as it is meant to be.

As per spot & stalk, when you get down to it, the animal is being pursued afoot, not much difference.

i to got my first deer off the ground and i dont regret not getting in my stand that night but i would much rather prefer spot and stalk over sitting all day so if you get tired of sitting, take a walk you never know what you might find. the biggest buck i ever seen was by simply sneeking through the woods.
