Campfire

Finally Did It!

Uploaded on September 24, 2009

Yesterday was a great day for me, I shot my very first coyote! It was a very strange deal for me since I wasnt exactly hunting them. I was out squirrel hunting and came across some tracks, I didnt think much about them and continued on my journey. I made it up the hill side a little ways and noticed what looked like something had dug a hole. I examined it a little not knowing really what it was and I could see that it was fresh. I started to walk again and about 20 or 30 ft in front of me, there it stood. It broke for the woods and I quickly raised my single shot .410 and sqeezed one round off. BLAM! It went down! I have never shot one before (always wanted to) so I really didnt know what to do with it. I figured I would skin it and sell it when/if I got anymore. Skinning it was hard! It took me about 2-3 hrs! Next time though I will be prepared! I hope to have the picks posted here soon! Be sure to look for them!

Congratulation! A coyote is a tough target and very hard to get close to. Skinning is a chore but the more you do the easier it gets so go out and shoot a bunch more. Good luck hunting this fall!

I read the response by jason rieke and would like to add my 2 cents worth. My father was a outlaw as far as game laws were concerned. He grew up in the 20's and money and jobs were hard to come by. He fed his family by what he was able to hunt and bring home. The gun that he used, because the family owed one and the cost of the ammo, was a 22 rimfire. He shot virtually all kinds of game with the 22 rifle. I'm not talking about a 22 self-loader but a single shot rifle. Because of the volume of deer that he shot with the 22 he preached the importance of never underestimating this round and never being careless with it. Many animals are taken every year with underpowered rounds, shot placement is the key. The 410 shotgun is not the best coyote gun by any standard but "the right pellet in the right spot"!

libertyfirst,
It's pretty much legend in our family how my Uncle Morris fed a great number of folks with his .22 during the Great Depression. You could call it poaching (it was) or whatever, but in that context they were doing what they had to do to live. I would guess he took hundreds of deer with that gun. There were stories of him having to take deer to town to trade for ammunition to go get another deer to have for the family to eat.

Like the .22, the .410 is not the joke some people think it is. Just this week the 5 year old boy killed that 800# gator in TX. Talk about the 'golden BB' - wow.

Thats a great story! Go in for squirrels, and come out with a coyote. My first gun was a .410. I killed my first(and only) coyote last year. i was in the stand and he basically appeared in the middle of the field i was hunting. he was so quick that i didnt see him come in. the ol .243 took care of him though.
