Bass Fishing

St.Croix River in Maine

Uploaded on January 18, 2009

I will hopefully be going on a fishing trip on the St.Croix river in upper Maine, and I was wondering what type of fish I will be catching? And what type of tackle (lures, rod actions/weight, etc) would be best suited for the St.Croix? I am looking to use a spinning rod and a fly rod on the trip.

I did a three day float on the river four or five years ago and it was one of the best ever. Easy whitewater for excitement, lots of fine campsites, and good fishing. We caught smallmouth, pickerel, and, oddly, fall fish on dry flies. Check out the grass flats on Loon Lake for the picks.

I've fished the St. Croix off-and on for smallies in the general area of Princeton/Woodland in extreme southeastern Maine for a lot of years. Excellent smallmouth fishing. I'd say 8-pound mono on a medium-weight spinning rod with the usual assortment of small bass lures, spinners, and jigs. I flyfish there with a 7-weight rod/line using (most often) a Sneaky Pete surface bug or a Clouser Minnow subsurface. Good luck!
