Saltwater
I am going to Rhode Island and Maine in the end of August. Does anyone have suggestions for surf fishing? Locations? Gear? Bait or lures? Can you eat what you catch? It might sound dumb, but I am a freshwater fisherman from Michigan, and this will be the first time in salt water. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.
Never surf fished on the East coast. Here I would say to use bug repellent, Waders, 10'-12' surfcast rod w/reel.
I usually hit points, ledges with steep dropoffs on one side, creek or rivermouths, and look for flats.
Live bait works if your main goal is catching fish, as always. Check with loocal baitshops, some you can find on line, and check out their bait offerings. Most likely you can get some of the same baits at home cheaper.
If you are going to be there a while you might want to hire a local guide the first day if you can.
Depending on how stout you are, the waders might not be a good choice. Not sure how the surf can get in RI, but I've taken a couple nasty tumbles, and once wearing waders (long ago in CA)... the one time I wore waders they filled up, dragged me down, and the surf action ground me against the sand. Got my feet under me and fought my way out of the water, but those things can be a death trap.
Good water shoes and some shorts unless you are doing it at night. Then I'd talk to a local tackle shop regarding kit.
It's a different game, going from fresh to salt. Be very fastidious about cleaning your gear if you are using your freshwater reels. Take them apart after every trip, wash in clean water. Same with your line, rinse it well. There are a couple sprays available to treat your line and reel, but they really gunk up the works if you spray too liberally.
Check out Stripers Online (google it.), they're mainly in New England, and a helpful group.
Have fun, and as far as I know, the stripers you catch here are the same ones I buy in the local fish markets here in the Boston area.

Surf fishing is an exciting sport and inexpensive to get into if your just starting out. It isn't necessary to start with quality gear. You can do that after you learn more about it. Stores like Walmart and Gander Mountain sell combo surf rods & reels for around $50. Since you don't live near the coast you won't be using it that much and the fish don't know the difference. You can even use some of your freshwater gear
The surf environment is very harsh especially on budget gear or freshwater gear. I wouldn't recommend using one of your good freshwater reels. Whatever you use, be sure to rinse off your gear with fresh water at the end of the day.
If you're not sure what to fish for use shrimp for live bait. Shrimp is a favorite with most surf fish.
