If you could only have 3 rifles...
Uploaded on December 09, 2009The question and topic "What is the best all around rifle" or "If you could only have one rifle" has been brought up a lot. But I am gonna switch it up a bit. If you could only own three centerfire rifles of different chamberings what would those be chambered in? (consider you hunt everything from prairie dogs and coyotes to moose and bear, so pretty much everything in America)

I guess I'd go .243, .270, .300 Winchester.
Put the .243 in a Ruger #1. I think that would be a fun varmint gun, though I would probably hunt whitetails with it occasionally as well.
The .270 I'll take in a Model 70 Featherweight for everything from deer through elk. If its okay with everybody, I'll keep the one I have.
And the .300 I would like in an early Ruger M77. I really want the tang safety and adjustable trigger.
I'd have to go with the one's I already have.

I have to cheat and not include a 22 Long Rifle. After all, when you are a kid (6 to 60) it magically changes from a rabbit rifle, to deer rifle, to a slayer of rogue elephant. Therefore, having these mystic qualities is excluded from the three rifle count.

Okay well I know this isnt a centerfire but I could never give it up: My Ruger 77/.22 (for target shooting, plinking, and small game)
2. Winchester Model 94 .30-.30 (for feral pig and deer)
3. Ruger 77/.44 mag. (After learning to shoot with my ruger 77/.22 I would want to hunt big game with the same style)(for anything I couldn't get with the .30-.30)
As of now I only own the 77/.22 considering I have never done any hunting besides a few upland bird hunts(however, I have shot thousands of rounds at targets). Hopefully getting to go do more hunting in the near future.
.25-06 bolt gun for almost any game.
DPMS LR308 AP4 for big game and self defense.
.50 BMG auto for any unwanteds
I forgot to mention, If we count shotguns, I would replace the 44 mag with a 16 or 20 ga. shotgun.

3)my Sharps replica in 45/70-As long as I have primers I can make black powder, and lead slugs can be cast easily. The bazillion (OK, slight exaggeration) rounds I already have made up would last me for years anyway.

Good for anything North America has to offer
1) My Sedgley 1903 in .30/06-can't think of anything in N. America it won't take if the shot is good.
2)AR-15-so many uses, small game to defense.
3)my Sharps replica in 45/70-As long as I have primers I can make black powder, and lead slugs can be cast easily. The bazillion (OK, slight exaggeration) rounds I already have made up would last me for years anyway.
1. Ruger M77. .243 for coyotes and Deer - out to three hundred yds.
2. Savage model 11 in .243 for rough weather carry for deer - same range
3. Browning BAR in 30-06 for up to 200 yds. for anything in Maine bigger than a deer.
If we're talking about 3 rifles to survive with, I would go:
.22 lr semi-auto
.270 bolt action
.338
If we're talking about 3 rifles just to have, I would go:
.223 AR platform

any lever action cowboy rifle
