Big Game Hunting
I have been researching elk units in wyoming for about a month in order to meet the january 31 applicaton deadline. I am a nonresident with 1 preference point. I have filtered my top units down to 35, 38, 39, 45/46 and possibly units 33 and 34. These units are all in the Bighorn mountain range. Although these units are not the trophy units in the state, I feel they have the best mix of quality, opportunity, and drawing odds. And no wolves or grizzlies to contend with.
Anyone out there have any suggestions on these units or an outfitter that guides those areas.
I actually guided for Wind River Mountain Outfitters in Dubois, Wyoming in 2004. Area 67. Good draw rate and the elk are in the wilderness. If you are a non-resident you will have to hire a guide to hunt in Wyoming wilderness areas. The wolves and grizzleys are in the area but the elk are native and still there. There's nothing like horse back into the wilderness of Wyoming for elk and big horns. Look for Fritz at Wind River Mountain Outfitters.

Tell me more about area 67 as I am interested in the area and to hear if you have been back there lately.

Are you sure there are no grizzlies or wolves in these areas. I know wolves can travel a long ways and they have been seen in Colorado coming from Yellowstone.
I should have pointed out that Wyoming Game and Fish do not recognize their existence in those units. Wolves are present, but not prevalent. I have not heard of any Griz's in the area.
I hunted mule deer in the Bighorns (Region "R" units 49& 51) a few weeks back. I sat facing North one evening and listened to bugling bulls to the East (3-4 miles) in a herd of 500 strong- trying to keep tabs on deer movement in my binoculars. Pretty distracting to a cheesehead! There was some debate as to whether the herd was on private or public land. The public is accessible via a road off HWY 14 outside Shell, WY.- or hoofing it up the canyon floor and tenting it upstairs. When I saw those bulls on my spotting scope, It took some fortitude to train my eyes to look for mulies!
108/21. they are in southern wyoming over by rawlins . last year there was between 3000-5000 elk within 20 miles of rawlins
