Your question doesn't allow enough space on this board to begin answering everything. I would start by befriending a co-worker that you know does a lot of elk hunting. Be totally honest about your intent, asking to share their knowledge about hunting elk. From different season options, rifle (or bow) selection, gear (clothing, hunting pack,camp,etc.). Contact Ntl.Forest ranger districts and arrange to meet with the wildlife biologist's, silviculturist's (ask where browse damage is occuring most).Begin to learn to read maps and familiarize yourself with drainages your refered to. Get a good compass and learn to use it well. I've given you a smidgen of what requires a lot, but I hope it's a beginning for you. Good luck and happy hunting! Elk hunting is a kick.
268bull is right.

Lots of advice. Best of luck to you.
Were about do you live in Mt??
I live in troy montana (northwest) and all it takes to get a bull around here is scout all year long and pretty go as far back in the woods as possible.
Get into good shape, buy good binos, and learn to shoot a good rifle that can take down an elk, 7 mag is my choice.
Takes alot of scouting, be in good shape, pick a gun you can shoot well, do alot of glassing and have a couple of buddies to help you get it out of the woods.
