Deer Hunting

Are does more likely to get "blue nose" during hot dry summers.

Uploaded on March 06, 2009

The past two years have been hot and dry in southern illinois. We have had a considerable number of deaths due to "blue nose." We have witnessed at least 2 and found several more carcasses. I'm wondering if does are more likely to contract it because of the stresses of raising fawns. This fall I saw very few what I would call older does. I saw mainly fawns and yearlings. Or its is just indiscriminant taking the unlucky.

Yes, Blue tongue and EHD are spread more easily during dry periods. Especially where deer may be forced to gather at limited water sources by drought. Just like mixing sick people together with the well in crowded conditions, disease is more easily spread.
