Freak Rack

By Kim Hiss

Deer1

Look what Lou Alexander's husband dragged out of the woods! At first he'd thought the deer was an antlered doe, but then realized it was a male with a "very small unit." Lou said they nicknamed the deer Pat, and added:

The bases on this guy are massive, there are 11 scoreable points, but as you can see the rack lacks anyDeer3 length and is still in velvet. We didn't see any exterior female parts and I'm not good enough to pick out the reproductive organs internally, but if there were some I'm sure they would have been under sized too. Our taxidermy guy told us that the doe's he's seen have had a rubbery consistency to their antlers, but Pat had hard antlers. Just something different to see. I'm sure any fans of SNL will understand the name :)

Another thing, my husband also shot a very nice 10 pt buck later and he came in on Pat's trail like he was smelling a hot doe.

I certainly haven't seen anything this bizarre this season. Anyone else? - K.H.

I'm not sure if you realize that the 27 pt doe is also from Kansas. I told Tim that a doe had a better rack than Pat :)I've spent part of my season trying to get my daughter her first deer. She shot a small 8 pt last Sat. pm, but we couldn't find it. I think it got into the grass, which is very tall and thick this year. Talk about bummed. We'll try for a doe the first of the year.Lou

Wow! That's unique all right! Congratulations to your husband, Lou ...on both deer...the ten pointer was a real bonus! My husband is a taxidermist and he has some "strange" looking deer come into his shop, but nothing like that! Last year, mid Dec., he had a hunter bring in a huge 9 pointer in full velvet. (2 Months after the velvet should have been gone) and he/she/it had BOTH sets of reproductive organs. And just yesterday, a fellow hunter killed a true pie-bald buck, an 8-pt., that he isn't sure he wants to mount. So Harrell, my husband, offered to buy the deer from him and do a full body mount for his display room. (They're still negotiating.)Laura, I clicked on your name and the picture of the 27-pt. doe did come up. That is one awesome looking deer! Remember when we were all talking about getting the shakes when it's time to pull the trigger....I'd probably be shaking so badly, I'd fall out of my tree if I had the crosshairs on something like that!!!!

Well, if that isn't the coolest thing. Would definately mount that one as it is probably a once in a lifetime trophy. Congrats to your husband on the harvest of both deer.Muzzle loading started this morning in Michigan. We took the tractor last night to get to our blinds and had to back up many, many times and "get a run at it".I am so worried about the deer with all the snow we have gotten and it is so early. I wish we could feed but they are giving out BIG fines for that in our area. You can see where they have TRIED to dig in the fields and get down to the food but there is a foot of snow already. Very obvious that they are eating pine and cedar to fill their hungry bellies. I feel so bad. But, this is how the strong survive and the weak don't...it is all a part of natures cycle.Hoping to do my part this weekend and keep ONE from starving to death. :)Happy HuntingJB

That is too cool!! Looks like it has a rabbit on its head. Lol I definitely would have assumed an antlered Doe also.Congrads to your husband Lou! Both on this deer and the 10-pointer! You better tell him to move over and let you get some shots in! ;)Just yesterday I saw an antlered Doe posted on a hunting forum I visit. Click my name and hopefully the pic will come up. 27-Points.
