Indiana Hunts Down Dead-Beat Parents

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

From the Evansville Courier and Press:

“We don't want to take anybody's license for hunting, fishing or driving," [Gov. Mitch] Daniels said Monday at the Statehouse. "But if you won't do your duty, then there are certain privileges the state confers that ought not be yours until you start doing your duty."

Do you agree?

Lil BillNo one said the damn thing is fair! I just pointed out two ways to be certain you don't end up as a father on the wrong end of a paternity/child support order. If you don't want a vasectomy you don't have to get one! Just understand the potential consequences if you are sexually active.SA

My ex and I had equal joint custody of our daughter. Two weeks with one parent, then two weeks with the other. And I had to pay support. After all those years (over $50,000 total) my ex had no money for my daughter's college. In the summers, I had to pay child support and daycare. usually over $700 a month combined. The system isn't fair. If I had been allowed to pay $50 a month less in support and put that $50 in a college savings plan, my daughter would have had her college money. I figured out on way to beat it though. Marry a woman who is getting as much or more in support than you are paying!

Not taking care of your children is irresponsible and bad period. Having said that. I personally view hunting and fishing as an innate human right, not a state sanctioned privilege! One can harp "it's the law" all one wants, but man's hunting an fishing predates any code of laws. The legal system is definitely skewed in favor of the woman when it comes to child support, visitation, and etc.

My parents divorced when I was 5 and my dad actually got majority custody and my mom paid child support. And its not because of any illegal or bad parenting skills on her part.Just letting you know not all judges give the mother custody immediately.

The only way to make it fair and equitable is to grant true joint custody.6 months w/mommy, 6 months w/daddy and no money changing hands.Problem is, the courts will never, ever go for it. Fathers are looked upon as providers (check books) first and caregivers only on their weekends and when the ex's want to go on a date and can't find a sitter. And before it starts, men can try to get custody, but the mother would have to be a meth head, cooking and selling drugs, plus have killed three or four people before the courts would even think about giving custody to daddy.

this whole topic up sets me to no end. Why is it that always the male half of the relationship ends up paying the support for it seems like and eternity?! It seems to me that there are plenty of unfit women that can not take care of their children, for example there is s woman in my home town that could not keep them shut she was sleeping with anyone and every one that wanted to, she would become pregnant and then there would be 4 or 5 paternity tests that would have to be taken, she would collect at least 300.00$ for the child a month. and the man had to pay all the time. She has 7 kids only two of wich are from the same father. (none of wich are mine) a good friend has one though. he gets to see his daughter every other weekend and they live in the same small town. Minden has approximatley 650 people in it. To comment on your post Silver Arrow why does the male always have to get a vasectomy, to hell with that maybe the lady should get tied. For some reason the male should get fixed all the time. I realise sometimes the relationship does not work for whatever reason and when there are children involved there still financial obligations to the children but the man is not always the person who should pay. The only way that the male can get custody of the kid / kids is to prove the woman unfit, and come on ladies how are we to do that, seriously who would turn down free money! I JUST THINK THAT THE CHILD SUPPORT SYSTEM IS CRAP!

WaltFirst off a pre-nuptual agreement covering child support would be thrown out of any court in the land. Most if not all pre-nups are null and void once a child is born.Child support laws should be nationally uniform and reasonable.I also think that the threshhold for denial of things like licenses should be much lower; you can't get a US Passport if you are in arrears for more that $2500.00.As for not wanting to pay child support -- don't get married, get a vasectomy, become a priest -- don't father a child! That is the safest bet there!SA

If men were smart they would not get married without a pre-nup that covers child support in case of divorce. My ex was caught with her ankles in her ears with another guy, I divorced her, she received from the wonderful stat of Michigan- custody and 674.26 per month. This C gets away with everything, works a 39 hr. job (7 years now) so she can't receive insurance. Her husband makes 20.00 plus a hour but they cannot afford 40.00 extra a month for insurance on my daughters- what a crock. The worst part is that the state lets her get away with it. She hits my daughters,I call child protective services, they do nothing. I feel there ought to be some laws as to where child support actually goes! Women who receive child support ought to have to provide a "Itemized List" each Month as to where that money was spent with receipts for public record!! It's only fair.

If you read the article it's only for parents that owe $25K or more. Why doesn't the state step in before then? What happened to attaching their wages (if they work)?Bottom line, the child support/custody laws have been a screwed up mess for years. Many of the women feel they can't get their ex husbands to pay, and the men feel like all they are is a check book and get to see their kids a whopping 4 full days a month. Meanwhile, the kids get stuck in the middle. What a mess......
