Congratulations Scott! Awesome buck!! Ive hunted Camp Ripley many times and it is not an easy hunt. The 1992 Minnesota State Record archery non-typical was actually broken last year by Ben Spanjers. Ben's buck was harvested in October of 2008 in Houston County. Ben's buck scored 226 3/8".

We saw this beauty at the check in station as we were heading out for lunch and to warm up on the first day at Ripley and were blown away. Anyone that hunted the first slot knows that it was a tough weekend because of the weather. Deer were skittish and not moving like most years. Makes it even that much more impressive. Nice job Scott!

That is one nice buck. I participated in the same hunt and saw a total of 4 deer (all does). 2 of them ran by when I was putting up my stand on the 1st morning so I decided not to put up a stand on the 2nd morning and I got busted on the ground trying to pull my bow up when 2 more were approaching. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Congrats on the buck!

from dakasper wrote 4 years 25 weeks ago

There are plenty of big bucks at camp ripley but this one would be hard to beat. Also, just to clear things up, I'm not sure I would necessarily call camp ripley "public land" since it is closed to the public all year with the exception of these two archery hunts and possibly a youth shotgun hunt I believe (all of which need to be applied for of course)? I think that is what makes it possible to shoot this big of a buck on this track of land. It is only hunted a half dozen times a year.

Hey Margaret Shaw, gat the hell off this website and never come back. You are totally ignorant. You don't even know what you are talking about. The hunter was just hunting. He was not "trying to kill everything he sees" or any of the insane things you said. He was just hunting. I am VERY upset that you are too stupid and sheltered to understand that. Just leave.

I am not a fan of killing just for the sake of killing (whether it's deer or fish or fowl or retired "trophy" zoo animals). But that's not what this family was doing. They were hunting meat for the winter, something mankind has been doing forever. And with a bow, not automatic weapons. Would you rather this magnificent beast die of starvation? Or be poisoned? Or torn apart by a pack of hungry wolves or wild dogs? It appears that the DNR is doing a great job of managing herd numbers so deer can get so big and healthy. The bigger question is: What's an anti-hunting fanatic doing on the "Field & Stream" site anyway???
