Theodore Roosevelt owned a great many rifles. The one he thought most highly of was a Winchester Model 1895 chambered in .405 Winchester. When Roosevelt left for Africa in 1909, the Model 1895 was Winchester’s newest lever gun, built to handle modern smokeless cartridges. He packed three of them for the trip. Before long, he’d given the rifle a nickname that stuck: “Big Medicine.”
Later, Roosevelt wrote, “The Winchester .405 is... the medicine gun for lions.” Coming from a man who owned hundreds of firearms, there wasn’t much higher praise.mMore than a century later, “Big Medicine” is still remembered for the same reason Roosevelt remembered it: when the shooting got serious, it answered the mail.

Happy Fourth. Go catch a story. 🇺🇸
In a classic Field & Stream essay, Ted Leeson made the case that no fish better represents America than the humble bluegill—not because it’s flashy, but because it’s adaptable and willing to bite for just about anyone.
He argued panfish are “the fish of the people,” teaching generations of kids how to fish, feeding countless families, and proving that the best days on the water don’t require expensive gear or exotic destinations.

The fight over the West Fork Bitterroot is a version of a conflict playing out on public land watersheds across the West: resource extraction proposed at the headwaters of fisheries that anglers have spent generations protecting. What makes this one worth watching is scale—an 11.3-square-mile mine claim above a river known for salmonflies and 20-to-40 fish days is not a minor disturbance.
The outfitters, conservation groups, and local residents pushing back here represent the same constituency that has defended trout water from Idaho to New Mexico. Their opposition matters, and so does the outcome.

That’s nearly two centuries of dodging anglers before Henry Liebman caught this 40-pound shortraker rockfish off Sitka, Alaska, on June 25, 2013. It became the new state record, but the bigger story was its age.
Based on its size, Alaska biologists believed the fish could have been around 200 years old—meaning it survived 199 Fourth of Julys before finally taking a hook.
Some fish become dinner. Others become history.

After tagging her first-ever Merriam’s turkey in Wyoming, Caroline Langdale drove to Idaho—and left with a new state record.
She landed a 30.5-inch brown trout that officially broke Idaho’s catch-and-release state record, edging the previous mark by just half an inch after it had stood since 2016.

Some tackle boxes don’t just hold fishing gear—they hold family history. One angler opened his grandfather’s old tackle box and found decades of fishing history packed inside: vintage Hoefer lures, Pflueger reel oil, split shot still in the original tin, wine corks used as bobbers, and other pieces of gear that likely saw the water from the 1930s through the 1950s.
The old lures are cool. The better part is seeing how fishermen made do with what they had. Different gear. Same goal. 📸: u/SkinTeeth4800

Ammunition is meant to be shot. Collectibles are meant to be admired. Every so often, something comes along that makes both arguments equally convincing.
To mark America’s 250th anniversary, Winchester released a commemorative series built around different chapters of the American story. Each package pairs a classic Winchester load with a theme: Pioneering America (30-30 Power-Point), American Hunter (270 Power-Point), Defending Freedom (45 Auto FMJ), Committed to Conservation (12 GA XPERT Waterfowl), and Building Traditions (12 GA AA Target).
The cartridges are familiar. The stories behind them are, too. The only question is whether you’d carry a box into deer season or leave it on the shelf for the next generation. What would you do?

Lipsey’s does not manufacture guns. What they do—and what they’re good at—is specking out modified, almost-custom versions of factory-offered firearms.
The reason Lipsey’s is good at what they do is because they listen to experienced shooters and hunters who can see the upgrade potential in factory guns that manufacturers often overlook. That’s exactly what Lipsey’s has done with this revolver, by building on the idea of a revolver S&W offered but discontinued a little more than a decade ago. Like is often said, it’s the little things, and the little things are what make Lispsey’s exclusive Smith & Wesson Model 386 NightGuard the special revolver that it is.
Those details earned it Best Overall in The Best Handguns of 2026 roundup, tested and reviewed by Field & Stream Shooting Editor Richard Mann. Drop a “NIGHT” comment to read more by @emptycasesrm

Jo Dee Messina: Jesus, 12‑Year Hiatus & Her ‘Bridges’ Comeback
Jo Dee Messina IS BACK!
In this episode, Mary O’Neill Phillips sits down with 90s country icon Jo Dee Messina to unpack the highs, lows, and miracles behind her return to country music. Jo Dee shares how everything she’d built seemed to crumble, her battle with cancer, and the front‑porch encounter with Jesus that changed the entire direction of her life and career.
They dive into why she stepped away from the spotlight for 12 years, how fame, labels, and industry pressures impacted her, and what led to her finding peace, purpose, and a deeper faith. Jo Dee talks through the journey to her new album Bridges, the CMA stage she was told she’d never stand on again, and why her biggest desire now isn’t another No. 1—but a ministry and space where people can come to know Him.
If you grew up on “I’m Alright” and her 90s hits or you’re walking through your own season of rebuilding, this conversation will hit you straight in the heart. Listen in as Jo Dee Messina and Mary O’Neill Phillips go to “church” on country, calling, and the goodness of God in the middle of real‑world struggles.
