Theodore Roosevelt owned a great many rifles. The one he thought most highly of was a Winchester Model 1895 chambered in .405 Winchester. When Roosevelt left for Africa in 1909, the Model 1895 was Winchester’s newest lever gun, built to handle modern smokeless cartridges. He packed three of them for the trip. Before long, he’d given the rifle a nickname that stuck: “Big Medicine.”

Later, Roosevelt wrote, “The Winchester .405 is... the medicine gun for lions.” Coming from a man who owned hundreds of firearms, there wasn’t much higher praise.mMore than a century later, “Big Medicine” is still remembered for the same reason Roosevelt remembered it: when the shooting got serious, it answered the mail.

250 years in steel on walnut.

In a classic Field & Stream essay, Ted Leeson made the case that no fish better represents America than the humble bluegill—not because it’s flashy, but because it’s adaptable and willing to bite for just about anyone.

He argued panfish are “the fish of the people,” teaching generations of kids how to fish, feeding countless families, and proving that the best days on the water don’t require expensive gear or exotic destinations.

The fight over the West Fork Bitterroot is a version of a conflict playing out on public land watersheds across the West: resource extraction proposed at the headwaters of fisheries that anglers have spent generations protecting. What makes this one worth watching is scale—an 11.3-square-mile mine claim above a river known for salmonflies and 20-to-40 fish days is not a minor disturbance.

The outfitters, conservation groups, and local residents pushing back here represent the same constituency that has defended trout water from Idaho to New Mexico. Their opposition matters, and so does the outcome.

That’s nearly two centuries of dodging anglers before Henry Liebman caught this 40-pound shortraker rockfish off Sitka, Alaska, on June 25, 2013. It became the new state record, but the bigger story was its age.

Based on its size, Alaska biologists believed the fish could have been around 200 years old—meaning it survived 199 Fourth of Julys before finally taking a hook.

Some tackle boxes don’t just hold fishing gear—they hold family history. One angler opened his grandfather’s old tackle box and found decades of fishing history packed inside: vintage Hoefer lures, Pflueger reel oil, split shot still in the original tin, wine corks used as bobbers, and other pieces of gear that likely saw the water from the 1930s through the 1950s.
