Derrek Sigler joined the team at Field & Stream full-time in 2023. Before that, he was a freelance writer for Field & Stream and Outdoor Life, as well as many other outdoor publications and websites.

Experience

Derrek Sigler is a native of northern Michigan. He has been writing about the outdoors professionally for over 20 years. His first real job was writing content for Cabela’s website from the old headquarters in Sidney, Nebraska. From there he moved with his family to Wisconsin to work for the now defunct Krause publishing company as the editorial director for the outdoor and Gun Digest books group.

Sigler wrote for ATV.com, Off-Road.com, Outdoor Hub, Outside Pursuits, Petersen’s Hunting, North American Whitetail, Wildfowl, Whitetail Journal, Predator nation, UTV Off-Road, ATV Sport, and Successful Farming. He also wrote for Field & Stream as a freelancer before joining the team full-time in 2023.

He has been hunting, fishing and riding ATVs for over 40 years.

Education

Sigler moved to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where he studied fisheries and wildlife management and creative writing at Lake Superior State University before transferring to Northern Michigan University, where he received both a BS (1999) and a Master of Arts degree (2001) in creative writing. His Master’s thesis was a collection of humorous fishing stories that received special distinction from the dean of graduate studies for originality.
