How to Position Your Treestand Using A Compass

When putting up treestands, use a compass

Heading out to do some preseason scouting for the best places to put up a tree stand? Don’t forget your compass. Assuming you know where you’re going, you won’t need the compass to get home. But you will need it to properly place the stand so you won’t be blinded by the sun at dawn or dusk. When you find a likely spot, pull out the compass to determine east and west. This may seem obvious, but a lot of scouting is done in the middle of the day and the obvious might not occur to you—until you’re on stand, squinting into the sun.

Good idea. you are right about not thinking of the obvious until it is too late.

I like the shady side of the tree for obvious reasons.

I leardned this lesson the hard way in past years. Since I only hunt one piece of property I am always able to keep the sun direction in mind.

Think about this I know being in the sun sucks, but if its cold the sun could keep you warm.

For a morning hunt, I like being in the sun to warm me up, and for an afternoon hunt, I like being int he shade. Good thinking on the compass thing, as sometimes it can get tricky figuring out direction in the woods.

Personal, I would still rather watch wind direction than sun direction.
