There are sounds in the woods. Then there’s this. A bull elk bugling can mean he’s calling cows, looking for them, or telling another bull to get the hell out of his neighborhood. Whatever the message, hearing one rip through the timber will make the hair on your neck stand up. A majestic moment captured by award-winning wildlife photographer Harry Collins

In 2014, Eva Shockey became one of the most visible women in hunting. Months later, people were threatening to kill her. That May, Shockey became only the second woman ever photographed solo and featured on the cover for the “What’s Next” issue of Field & Stream. By November, she was posing behind a 510-pound North Carolina black bear, the biggest bear she had ever killed. The meat went to the guides and their families. Then the photo hit the Internet, and the death threats followed. Shockey told F&S at the time that her father, Jim, had warned her about anti-hunters: “I’m a huge target for them because I’m a smiley young woman, and I’m different than who they’re used to dealing with.” Fast forward to today: 12 years later… Shockey sat down with @countryoutdoors and remembered the advice that kept her hunting: “You can either get scared and stop, and they win.” Unpack the full interview with Eva Shockey on the newest episode of Country Outdoors, out now. 🎧

Look at that color 👀 We sent a Field & Stream Fish Camp crew to live out of an RV for a week and fish their way across Texas, with one big objective: catch giant gar on the Trinity River. High water had the gar feeding, and the crew landed multiple fish over 6 feet, including a 74-inch giant and a 7-foot-3 monster. But this unusually dark gar was the fish that had everyone taking a second look. Alligator gar are living fossils built for these waters. They can breathe air, wear armor-like ganoid scales, and grow to truly enormous proportions. Even so, you don’t see one that looks like this every day. Ever seen an alligator gar this dark? #FSTexasRV @victorinoxnorthamerica @gorving
