Outdoor Skills - Hunting Q&A

Q: During the off-season, I hike in an area where bear and cougar sightings are frequent, and a couple of attacks have taken place. Just in case, I carry a 12-gauge police shotgun, a 14-inch Bowie knife, and a .357 magnum revolver. Am I overprotected, or should I be packing something altogether different?

A: A hand grenade might prove useful, but if it were me, I'd settle for a big can of pepper spray or else stuff some rifled slugs in the shotgun and let it go at that.
