Outdoor Skills – Hunting Q&A

I notice that you never recommend the .243 or the 6mm for deer hunting, despite their popularity. How come?

Because of the extremely small size of their bullets, I think they’re marginal cartridges for this use. If your shot is precise and the bullet performs perfectly, they’ll kill like lightning, but if anything goes wrong, a deer that should have been fatally hit can get away wounded. I’ve heard of too many instances of this happening, from people whose reports I trust, to think otherwise.
