Q: I have heard that by handloading .45/70 ammo for the Ruger Number One single-shot, it's possible to bring the old cartridge almost up to the level of a .458 Winchester Magnum. Is this true? If so, would it make a good Cape buffalo load? -Joel Kuhns, via e-mail

A: The Number One action is tremendously strong and will allow you to soup up the .45/70 to fairly near .458 levels. Such a load would make good Cape buffalo medicine. Personally, I like bolt actions. They hold four shots, sometimes five, and I have often wished for eight shots, sometimes 10.
