A: The answer is a definite maybe. The cat you’re referring to, Felix concolor, is certainly eligible for the condition known as melanism, or a profusion of dark pigment in the fur. However, I couldn’t find any confirmations of its existence. Leopards, on the other hand, definitely produce melanistic offspring, and the poet Odgen Nash summed it up best when he wrote: “If called by a panther, don’t anther.”
