Happily, Redfield riflescopes, which were discontinued in 1998, are now back. This Illuminator 3-9×42 has everything going for it: longer-than-average eye relief, great resolution, superb brightness and flare control, and perfect tracking. Like previous Redfield scopes, it has a low-profile eyepiece with a horizontally elongated FOV. Such ‘widefield’ eyepieces have always been controversial-with hunters either praising or scoffing at them-and similar emotions surfaced among our panelists. Two liked it, believing it would be great for running game. But another said, ‘What a gimmick! The wide field is nothing more than a circle with the top and bottom cut off.’ Eyepiece aside, no one denied that this was a very fine scope. Outdoor Life Gear Test 2001
