With its folding express sights, barrel-mounted front swivel stud and through-stock recoil bolts, the new Safari Express bolt-action rifle from Savage has a flavor of the traditional British express rifle; its not-so-traditional all-stainless-steel construction notwithstanding. The sample we test-fired was in .300 Win. Mag., and everyone appreciated the effectiveness of its on-or-off muzzle brake. Savage rifles have a well-deserved reputation for good accuracy, and our test sample was no exception, with some sub-minute-of-angle, five-shot, 100-yard groups being recorded. Chief complaints were the heavy 43/4-pound trigger pull, poor wood-to-metal fit and especially difficult magazine loading.
