Krystine Rivera went for a run and was knocked unconscious by a flying deer. The 27-year-old resident of Ashburn, Virginia, doesn’t remember a thing.

“I was running, then I was on the ground and then was listening to the paramedic. I’m surprised I made it out alive,” Rivera said.

Rivera didn’t realize she had been hit by a deer until the paramedics told her they had to cut off her shirt because it was soaked in the deer’s blood. Where the deer came from is no mystery.

Rivera was running alongside Clairborne Parkway in Loudon County, Virginia, around 6:00 p.m. A Toyota driven by a South Riding resident struck a buck, and sent it flying off the road and right into Rivera. The odds against that happening are high, but that didn’t help Rivera, or the deer, which died at the scene. Rivera and the driver were treated and released at a nearby hospital. Rivera suffered a concussion, a cut on her scalp and a bruised knee. She told interviewers: “My whole right side hurts.”

Having completed several marathons Rivera has no plans to quit running and says she will run along Claiborne Parkway again.
