I’ve spent the last several days on an amazing adventure on Kodiak Island in Alaska. Based at Kodiak Legends Lodge (www.kodiaklegendslodge.com) in Larsen Bay, Conway Bowman (author of the upcoming upcoming Orvis Guide to Beginning Saltwater Fly Fishing), Chris Santella (author of Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die, among others), a movie crew, and I have done everything from fly around in a deHavilland Beaver, to chasing blacktail deer, to shooting ducks, to catching salmon, Dolly Varden, and of course… wild steelhead.
As yesterday was October 10, 2010 (10-10-10), however, I set a lofty goal…to catch 10 wild steelhead in a single day. The 10-10-10…10. Mission accomplished, including this beefy hen (steelhead #4 of the day). I’m only guessing here, but I doubt many other guys caught 10 wild steelhead on 10-10-10… and that opportunity will not happen again.
What made it a perfect “10” on the fishing scale, however, was the good company I enjoyed… the shirt-sleeve weather and bluebird skies we experienced in Alaska in mid October. When we ran out of beer, pilot Jay Wattum was kind enough to make a rescue drop.
This had to rank as my perfect fishing day. What would be yours? Have you experienced it yet? –Deeter (Much more to come from the Kodiak, and the remarkable Karluk River…)
